Thanks Mystic, great diagram. Thanks to wannabriden too. I'm coming to an understanding.

The instructions did say along with the equalizer to do trial and error on flashers. Would be great if that's all it took.

I know there's been some talk here of wiring LED's into the stock tail/brake light. Maybe someday, don't want to go to far afield until I actually get it running. I can always add stuff later.

Actually, so-called "load equalizers" ARE there to consume extra power.

Standard blinker relays use a bimetallic strip.  This is a strip made of two pieces of different metals that are joined to each other.  One end is firmly mounted, the other end is touching a contact point.  When current flows through the strip, the two metals expand at different rates and so the strip flexes to one side.  As a result, the end of the strip breaks contact with the contact point, and current stops flowing.  The strip cools and returns to it's original shape, making contact again, allowing current to flow again.  Lather, rinse, repeat.


Now, since LED's have so little energy consumption, the current flow isn't enough to heat up the bimetallic strip, or it heats it only very little.  So, you get either no blinking, or very fast blinking.    Fast blinking because the bimetallic strip doesn't heat up (and therefore flex) very much at all, so it cools off very quickly and returns to it's resting shape quickly.



Now, "load equalizers" are installed across the turn signal leads, not inline with the LED's.  In other words, they're hooked up in parallel rather than in series.  If they were hooked up in series, they'd affect the operation of the LEDs, making them dimmer.  When hooked up in parallel, they allow some current to flow through themselves and then to ground.  This extra current is what "emulates" the bulb filaments, resulting in more current flow through the blinker, and restores your flash rate.



Instead of going this route, you can get a flasher relay that's specifically designed to work with LED turn signals.  Consider that more and more late-model cars have LED signals and brake lights.   The right flashers are out there, you just have to find them.

Load equalizers are for people who want to install LED signals without changing anything else at all on their bike.  Based on this thread, I suspect you're not in that camp ;)

Why not just get a couple or resistors? That's what I did on an after market tail piece I had on my Ducati for a while. Bulbs were half the wattage but just as bright as stock lights. The less wattage made them blink fast. Resistors took care of the problem.

resistors took care of the problem with my LED's on my 01 spirit.  no load equalizer required.  when i switched to led turn signals on my 02 blazer, i just bought a new flasher that was designed to support LED's, so it was effectively a load equalizer, but it was easier than wiring in resistors.

I can do resistors too if i have to. It can all wait till I'm further along. In the meantime, it looks good.

These cost about $10-$12 at Checker Auto, work great on LED turn lamps (or multiple, heavy-load incandescents). I use them when customers want the LED look (which reaaly IS cool, IMO!). They are bigger than the stock flasher, but look kinda cool because they have clear covers and you can see the works ticking back & forth. One unit I saw even had a little LED inside that flashed with the flasher!

My god man those look slick!!! I'm going to have to find you when the bike is finished just so I can look at it in person!!

Little known fact that Kuryakyn was in the process to have them DOT but decided that they should be auxillary only due to cost reasons. (or so said the design manager at Daytona a few years ago)

I have 3-terminal electronic flashers.... $10

And resistors in pairs w/inline connectors.... $13

the flashers are by far the easiest to use, but if you are into the stock stuff or don't want to change it the resistors work as well. You'll need a pair for each end of the bike though. At least from experience anway.

Patience. One a week, usually Sunday afternoon. Haven't missed but a few in nearly 1.5 years. But thanks for asking.

Today I dug deep for some parts for the next thrust, wiring this dude up. We spent an hour or so organizing some parts drawers that had always been askew. That will pay time dividends in the future.

I need to spend about another hour polishing the front hub, hope to do that yet today. Then get on to the lacing.

While looking for the switchgear and other wirey stuff, I've found some parts that need sellling.

Pretty cold in the shop, but we did it. The heater gets the air up to comfort (with a jacket) but the concrete will just suck the life out of you, even with insulated socks and floor coverings.

Takes time, but I dug up most of the elect system. Switch gear: I got a new right side from ebay.  A little odd, it has the "off" switch for the headlight, which I want. I've got two good used left sides that ought to clean up OK. Rectifier, can't find the solenoid and flasher but there in here somewhere.

Got a new loom from Yamiya, hung it on the ladder by the heater to work the coil out of it.

Found the box with risers from Novella. They are blocks machined to fit into the lower handlar bracket, and accept the handlebar. I've got them in 1/2. 3/4 and 1". Neat design.

It will give me a little more working room with the too tall fork legs, and I'd likely like the slight height, I'm a little older now.

Did what I wanted to do years ago, spent some time organizing my hardware and small parts drawers. They sit above eye level, you know the routine: open this drqawer, nope not in there, open next drawer, nope, next drawer, not there, usually its in the 4th drawer.

So now all organized and labelled. First drawer each time.



Not my favorite activity but spent more time polishing the front hub. It had been polished before, so no lacquer but real deep corrosion. Got it lookin pretty good, but needs another 1/2 hour or so. Then lace and true and hope to get rubber on it before next Sunday.

Fouind a few things to sell: CB/CM400 CB450T CX500D Fork Brace New Brand K&L; Large hex oil filter bolt, new in blister pack from GA Cycle,, the long one for the smaller 4s and the 1977 CB750, SOme new mirrors, used shock set backs, I'll get them in the classifieds soon.

Yup.

The headlight bucket is new, chromed steel. I bot it from Cycle Recycle Part II here in Indy. ITs a Kawasaki clone that he sells to virtually anyone needing a 7" replacement. Came with new rings and hardware for about $45 IIRC (bot it many years ago) which is a smokin deal.

Are those risers still available new somewhere?  I've been looking for a set in a 1" rise for my CB550.  At least now I know who makes them & will narrow down my search.
BTW: The bike looks awsome-keep up the great work-can't wait to see it finished!

The risers came from "Novella" which is a foreign firm I don't think sells in US anymore. They made a set of conversion thingies to convert the HawkGT from a above the bridge clipon handlebar to a conventional tube type bar. I have drag bars on the Hawk now with a set of the risers. Still above the bridge but about 3 inches lower than stock. The selection of risers came with those thingies.

Best bet now I think is to take that idea to a machinist. Once installed they are virtually seamless and simply raise the stock bar X amount. Of course you then need longer clamp bolts.

The Kawi replica shell looks cool, but I'm fearful that the bucket may not be large enough to hold all the wires. I may be talking to David.

I got mine from Ebay. Raises my bars by an inch. I think they were $35. Came with the longer bolts. Works very well. Sorry I dont recall the seller.

Are those risers still available new somewhere?  I've been looking for a set in a 1" rise for my CB550.  At least now I know who makes them & will narrow down my search.
BTW: The bike looks awsome-keep up the great work-can't wait to see it finished!
