the thought that springs to mind is that parts are getting tough to find for these things and anything that can give a component a new lease on life seems reasonable to consider.

performance improvements is icing on the cake imo.

Nothin to see this week. Organized some more parts bins, made some longer bolts for the handlebar clamps with risers. Started wiring by ffeding switch gear wires thru handlebars, clipping wire loom to frame. Tested out some otor mount bolts.

Using Rob Voxondas doubled rear motor mount, the bolt head hits the oil tank. I think Rob is using a different oil tank. So I cut down a buttonhead for that use and shimmed out the tank. Problem solved.

Office work piling up, had to clear a logjam before Super Duper Bowl and real work tomorrow morning.

Still putting off the final polish on the front hub, just not drawn to the job. Maybe at half time. Tho don't want to miss the Who. 60 year old rock and rollers, who'd a thunk it?

the who was pretty good although their voices were not what they use to be. i'll cut them a bit of slack given they've been belting out the tunes for most of my life.  ;D i don't care for medleys (sp?) either but it was a treat to see them play.

here 'tis Rob. No big deal. Side view for others to visualize as well, shows the outboard plate of the double motor mount. If one follows its line up you can sort of tell where the third bolt would be, behind the tank.

Front edge view, you can see the threads sticking out on the right, I'll trim them off, and the edge of the washer and buttion head bolt I'm using on the left directly behind the tank.. The tank actually has an indentation right there to help clear a standard bolt head. But the thickness of the outboard plate takes up most of the room.

The buttonhead would clear the tank by itself, but my sense of things requires that I put a flat washer there as well. Tightening down the tank bolt so it bottoms out on its shoulder, the tank hits the buttonhead. So I put a 6mm flat washer on the threaded part of the shoulder bolt, and alls well.

Another detail is that one must flatten the brake light switch mount. The folded over part which would normally notch into the frame, is interfered by the outboard plate. Not an issue on a racer, but I'll need the brake light switch. I figure I'll fold a little corner of it over to index against the edge of the outboard plate. That will hold it steady.

Another problem I'm having is what to do with the chrome bulldog from a Mack truck I've been holding onto for 30+ years. Should I mount it on the headlight?


Or more inconspicuosly on the backrest?

Well remembering my theme here is to incorporate as many of the things I've learned and heard about as a racer and a sport tourer, whether or not I actually need them or can use them.

Years ago I had heard that a good trick to tightening up the frame, besides the gussets and welding on the frame, was to pay attention to the motormounts. Fro the factory the mount clearances are very sloppy. That has been confirmed here by posts from HondaMan and then I stumbled aross Robs motormounts. I can't use the front one as I'm using a tipover guard. But I had the guard welded into the front motormount so i've accomplished the same thing there. The rear mount comes with a tightfit bolt, so I'm tightening up that issue.


In case you missed it, the two lower engine mount bolts have been enlarged (had to drill out the pegs, frame and cases to accept it), and the engine cases were enlarged. The bolts were remade larger diameter, from stainless, to be a pushfit thru the frame and cases. The front mounts were also enlarged tho I don't have bolts for them yet. The right side front lugs on the frame were removed and welded over. I tapped the frame to a 10mm size, from the spindly 8mms.

It'll be a tight MF.

Yeah, its a little sad to see, but we're all growing older. It just floors me how much music from that era is being used on current hit TV shows. Esp from the who. You could hear the audience singing along in the background.

My thought with the tank and covers is to get them over to the painter and have them primed. Then do nothing more till the bike is finished and the painter can see the whole thing.

OK Ron thanks, is clear for me now. Of course I developed the mounts with racing in mind. But you solved it OK! I'll run a test with countersunk bolts to clear the tank.

bulldog: i dunno about the headlight as it seems aesthetically awkward and maybe even stressful on the bucket material.

over the rear seat looks better but how is the misses gonna feel having his mussel in between her shoulder blades on those long rides?

this may be a bit involved but perhaps mocking up the gauges there is enough room for a simple but sturdy bracket so that the little dog can hover above the head light.

It would seem a shame to weld on that shiny new-ish fender though.  :'(

I missed that earlier, yes of course, the fender!  The back feet are tapped, so I just run a bolt up from underneath!

I may have to do this cryo thingie, MC. The C2/C5 gears on mine are worn enough to need new, getting the 1-2 jumpout once in a while (and 2-3 neutral: suspecting worn inner bearing letting the gears tilt too much after 136k+ miles).  :o

That dual motor mount from VOX is real trick!  8)

Glad i could provide a tasteful distraction.

Coincidentally, I had a friend in today who has worked for several of the racing shops in Indy/Brownsburg area. He most recently was with Gil de Ferran Motor Sports. They had to close shop for lack of sponsors, hopefully temporary, but my friend was picked up right away by Andretti Green. he's a very fine machinist and pit crew member. Their 100,000+sf shop is nearly a stones throw from here.

He did a stint with AG a few years ago. Said I could use their magnaflux cabs and glass bead cabs. Maybe get some fab work done when he's slow. Long way to get to this.

I asked him if they do Cryo. He said no, they throw parts away so fast it doesn't matter to them. But they do use REM Polishing. Makes their gears super slick. So I Googled REM Polishing and found this.

A Cryo/REM polishing outfit that does both. They say near the end that "Gears receiving our exclusive CRYO-REM (TM)  process are BULLET PROOF!  They will out perform and outlast your competitors gears at every turn.  "  So both processes are desirable.

Is it true that some of our most vulnerable CB750 gears are no longer available from Honda?

You mentioned your Cryo contact said they could turn around in a day?

From what I've read and heard, the proper process involves at least a few cold cycles, finishing with a bake in an oven. Minimum time 72 hours. Might want to look it up and ask them some questions. I know Cryo of Indiana needs 3 days.

It may be that a shorter process yields acceptable results. I personally don't know. I'm just saying.

I'm sorry.... I didn't clarify. I was originally talking to him about plastics. The XS850 primary chain is exposed from the crank behind the right side engine cover. I am going to make a "tensioner" to keep the chain from slapping the bottom of the cases when downshifting.

So we were talking about cryo-ing some delrin or maybe industrial mix polyester.

Yes.... anything metal would be 3-5 days. Sorry for the mix-up.
