Thanks guys and gals. I'm not above using colored grips, so it wasn't totally a joke. And those gold flake ones sound great! At least for the pictures.

Would go witha real heavy flake Plum Crazy Purple tank. with gold pin stripes.

Did lots of things, none of which seem to add up to progress. Still they were things that needed doing.

Someone mentioned this week they had let their carbs sit for 20 years and upon inspection the slides were stuck in the barrels. This got me thinking about mine, Mikuni 29mm Smothbores. Been sitting for 15 years. First pulled the float drains. Some nasty residue, but nothing that will flow out onto the workbench.

Tried to pry against the bellcrank and it would not move.
Pried a little more and pop it gave and everything moves pretty freely.

Dropped in some oil on both sides of the slides, worked them, turned upside down and set aside. Heavier cleaning to be done later.
Got a new air shock kit to get the pieces to renovate my air fork setup.

Tubing was tightly wound, couldn't really work with it, stretched it out with weights and heat. May put it in the sink with hot water.

Been fretting overthis. To me, I couldn't see how I was going to cram all those wires in the custom headlight bucket. My buddy thought they would go. He was right thank goodness. I was surprised how easy it was actually.

While in the wiring mood, we mounted up the left side electricals.

And finally, thinking I'll try to have the oil pressure gauge mounted up here.

Real Work has been consuming and will continue so for a few more weeks. Hopefully I'll find time to polish another front hub, lace up the front wheel, get a tire installed and get the front end over to Saldana for brace and fender mount, and oil gauge, airfork bracket.

Got a lead on a decent K1 Speedo, hope to get it.

also, i didn't realize there were 121 days in march  ;)

Simply, if I don't stick to the current plan and quit updating as i go I will never finish. I can always update that stuff after I'm up and running.  You cannot imagine how much I have upgraded the original build plan from years ago. From here on, I'll have blinders on till its running.

I'm missing the 121 days reference. If its a tease about how long its taking, well, I KNOW!   ;D

So, this week I'm back at it. First I did what i thought i couldn't, scored a decent K1 speedo on eBay. First one i was bidding on was whisked away "buy it now". So I figured it would be a struggle. The next one was actually in better shape than the first. and i got it for the high side of what i wanted to pay. Shipped in a few days. The chrome base was trashed, chrome bubbled, but i had one in my stash that's not perfect, but usable. A new one can be fitted after the fact. The rubber mounting ring was absent, but again I had a spare.  The body has the tiniest of dents near the rim, you wouldn't see it if i didn't show you. The wiring has hardened and crunchy, I've ordered some rubber renu and another product to soften it up. The face is checked, but i figured virtually any used instrument will need a new face. But with only 9900 miles on the clock, could be a low miles unit. Here's us sorting parts to come up with the best:

Final result:
So with the Free NOS Tach (not in picture, not picked up yet) and this speedo, I have both for less than $100. After building the front wheel, so i can get the measurements, I'll send the speedo to Foreign Speedo Repair in LA to have it recalibrated to be accurate with the smaller wheel. They'll install a new face for free since they will be in there anyway, I'll get it from Yamiya. I'd get a cheaper one like so many people make, but no one makes one for the K1 except Yamiya.  I'll send my K2 speedo and tach as well to have them checked out for resale. Their faces are in good shape.

The result is all idiot lites are in the instruments, so i have room for the oil pressure gauge and air fork filler where the lights used to go.

I worked on the hub, the spoke marks were sanded off and then i did the polish thing 3 grades of sandpaper, 3 grades of rouge. Looks good in the pictures, but not good enough to use. I get hurried and don't get all the scratches out before moving on to the next stage. So I'll spend some more time with it.

I fished the cam chain tensioner out of the parts cleaner and inspected. The one on the left looks brand new, I'm pretty sure its the original K2 tensioner. The one on the right is from a parts bike, nasty.

I'll polish the one on the left and it'll be ready for install. So while I've got it out, we'll talk about a problem that comes up with these occasionally for you CB750 guys. If your cam chain sounds noisy, and dosen't seem to respond to the adjusting routine, it could be that the shaft of the tensioner plunger is hanging up in the housing. The one on the right is crudded up and whe i pulled it out it borught the seal cup with it. That wasn't supposed to happen, that cup is supposed to stay with the housing. Upon reassembly, the one on the right would stick as you push the plunger in and out. The spring was always able to overcome the sticky spots, but it will hang for a moment. Over time that would get worse.

The one on the left slides freely all the way in and out, and it has a stouter spring to boot.

Also, the flat spot on the plunger rod is to be inspected. The lock bolt you can see in the housing has a machined tip that presses hard against that flat spot to hold the shaft there against the wildly flailing cam chain. Some over zealous owners will tighten that bolt too tight against the flat spot, causing it to dig in and over time make a detent. So when you go to adjust it, you think the plunger has moved forward as it should and you go to tighten it down and the bolt slips into that detent and the plunger backs up and you've lost your adjustment. The fix is to remove everything like you see here and file that detent out of the flat area of the plunger.

Another oddity, I don't know why the spring on the left is longer and beefier than the one on the right. Never knew them to be changed. Can't really say which is newer as i don't know the origin of the parts bike. I'd like to thinkthe one on the left is new and improved.

This week, continue to try and finish the front wheel, everything is hanging on that now.

Yeah, at first i couldn't stand their prices and stayed away. But then i drank the cool-aid.  :D  If they have something you want, and no one else does... well, I buy.

Their service is unbelivable, I get stuff from Japan faster than IL sometimes. And some of the things have been very reasonably priced and that helps.

Its been a busy MC weekend. Ran out to Harbor Freight store to pick up some tube brushes. A $20 purchase turned into much more as they had the 15lb soda blaster on sale and I bot it.
Hoping it will do what I want. Clean two bankc of CR29s, one for Phaedrus, one for Free Bird. Meaning to work on Phaedrus Sat PM, I got sidetracked to helping a friend clean out his deceased father-in law's garage/shop to sell the property. Promises of CB750 parts and who knows what? So I went. Big dud on the parts, save a cool sport bike fender for Free Bird,  but i took a lot of things to sell on eBay, official Honda GL1000, 1100, 1800 shop manuals and other GL related stuff. No 75/76 front ends.  >:(  Father in law had been an official honda mechanic. had a serious MC accident, lost a leg, built a trike, rode the last 5 years or so of his life till something else, cancer i think, took him. So I stayed for hours helping clean out the garage which had fallen into disarray from his disability

But the gem of the day, he had willed his mid 60s CL77 to his grandson and they needed a place to store it, so I volunteered. Quite a nice piece, supposed to have run within the last year.

Someone had a thread going about heel/toe shifters. They do exist, here's proof.

So I'm keeping the bike in my shop until the grandson takes the MSF course and gets his MC endorsement.
On to Phaedrus. Not happy with the hub polish, I sicked Bruce on resanding the hub. He hit it with 1000 grit wet/dry. This took out the bothersome scratches, I finished it with the white rouge and I'm more happy with it. The final finish is a little more satin than it was, but without the scratches. And in fact most of it is covered with the discs anyway. So we laced the front wheel and its on the stand:

I cleaned all the brake parts, which now need to be polished and assembled so the wheel and brakes can be mocked up.

Here's a shot of the first time the parts cleaner's been empty in how long?

Hoping to get some evenings in to speed up the process. We'll see...

That CL....what a honey!  I'm in love!  I fear the grandson will destroy it..... :'(

I think it's great you have a full shop......for me....much of that must be farmed out, or taken somewhere where I can do it......or get inventive and do it all manually.

Love the speedo!  Yamiha will want a fortune, but you will be happy in the end.

Rim looks outstanding!  High shoulder Excel's are really neat!

Keep it up, sir!

Another oddity, I don't know why the spring on the left is longer and beefier than the one on the right. Never knew them to be changed. Can't really say which is newer as i don't know the origin of the parts bike. I'd like to thinkthe one on the left is new and improved.

I know the answer to that one, teacher, pick me! Pick me!  ;D

Starting in the K4, Honda became concerned about the tensioner wear and noise problem: the chain would cut pretty deep grooves into the rubber on both the slipper and the tensioner roller. When the grooves appeared, the chain would slap on the lower part of the slipper tensioner (on the front of the engine) and no amount of tightening would quiet it if the engine was running a little unevenly at low speeds (1500 RPM or less). Hence, the "dent" that you mention would often appear from those zealots you mention, sometimes actually bending the shaft so much that the tensioner would stick real bad and become nearly impossible to adjust. I remember removing many of them to straighten and polish those shafts.

In response, Honda shortened the (front) slipper tensioner to be just the length of contact where the chain rode on it, so it could not slap against anything. Then they softened the rubber on the moving tensioner roller, too, to quiet things more. They also softened the tensioner's spring, so it would not dig the chain into the softer roller's rubber. Since the cam had lost about 3 degrees of intake duration by this time (all on the rising side of the intake lobes), the chain did not have to be quite as tight to maintain the cam timing (i.e., the loads were reduced a little).  :)
