Surprise! So the long spring was the early spring! Which is what I would have guessed as mine was K2 and I was pretty sure my parts bike was later. But it was counterintuiotive as one would think the longer stronger spring might have been an upgrade.

Same with the chain slippers, the shorter one is the newer one, I'd have guessed differently. Its probably obvious on a Fish but I haven't looked.

Thanks!

So...again....the idea is to use a K4 and newer adjustment setup with the inproved Hyvo chain.

Good to know!

First there is no Hyvo chain for a CB750K. Are you thinking of Heavy Duty?

I would prefer to use the older cam chain tensioner stuff. The improved stuff was to reduce noise, not necesarily that it was better at doing its job. The Later 750s suffered many compromises to amke a quieter engine, which I don'tcare about.

The 750 eh, or A as you call it has a hyvo. not sure what you use on the south end..
I have one, but wont run it..

The CL, is it a 67? Looks like the engine covers are chrome.. I remember a guy named Rob riding an orange one like that to school..

I thought there was one that was a Hyvo, That's why I said "K".

Don't know for sure on the age. The kin have the title and from memory they think its 64. Yes the grand dad chromed quite a few things, engine covers, carb tops, both stands, etc. The exhaust incl the muffler are excellent.  MAy be a re chrome on the front fender as its like a mirror. The rear may be original as its more like satin and bumpy.

I can see scratches in the paint with red showing through.

Wow was a busy weekend for you. That is one clean CL.. His grandson is a lucky guy hope he can appreciate it..

I like that rim, looks like lacing it was pretty easy.. well as easy as it can be.. ;) Want to take a trip to SE Wisc and do my rims? lol Keep us posted on the blaster I would like to know if it works well.

.: Scott :.
Yeah I'll be interested in what the blaster can do as well. i know there has been a good DIY blaster floating around the web, but I'm just not good with that sort of thing. I know it will do the carbs, don't know how it'll do against paint or chrome.

That CL....what a honey!  I'm in love!  I fear the grandson will destroy it..... :'(

I think it's great you have a full shop......for me....much of that must be farmed out, or taken somewhere where I can do it......or get inventive and do it all manually.

Love the speedo!  Yamiha will want a fortune, but you will be happy in the end.

Rim looks outstanding!  High shoulder Excel's are really neat!

Keep it up, sir!

~Joe

he seems to be respectful of what it is, but he is just a "kid" so we'll see.

That rim, a 2.15 x 18, (and its rear match up 3.5x17) are not "high shoulders" but rather conventional flat shoulders.

This is what a sholdered rim looks like.
http://www.buchananspokes.net/products/product_image.asp?img=excel_shouldered.jpg

We called them "mud-catchers" back in the day. If you used them on a dirt bike, the shoulder area would fill up with mud and would never come clean unless you physically removed the crud.

I actually had shoulders on Phaedrus I, and they were fun for the time, gets looks from the old timers. But the dimensions are limited. I wanted to go 3.5 on the rear and that's not available shouldered.

Thanks. Its a 140/70-17. With the 3.5 rim it gets a full spread look.

I had a new tab welded on the swingarm to move the brake stay out to fit a 150 or maybe a 160, but I've got to wear the 140 out first.

And really anything more than 140 is more than I need. But on the other hand its not about what we need is it?   ;)  At least not on a bike like this.

so MC, what do you think the widest tire you can fit on the swingarm is?  brake stay arm being relocated aside...

The chopper guys put the 5.00x16 on so that fits and is roughly equivalent to a 130. That's about it for a stocker.  Mine is 140 and may not have fit if I hadn't moved the brake stay. Moving the stay will allow for the 150 for sure and maybe a 160, depending on profile and brand, etc.. I'd say that's it as the next obstacle is the swingarm itself.

Also, if you stay with the stock 18" diameter I don't know as the tire width will be further forward into the narrowing swingarm.

A quickie update as i will be gone for the weekend starting tomorrow afternoon. My seasonal workload winds down and we take a break to our favorite getaway, Madison IN.

With the front wheel laced and nearly true, I ordered a tire from my local tire shop Cycle Outfitters which is high on the good sellers list. They tell me the Chinese will be pulling out of the market and have already pulled many unpopular sizes. So I couldn't get a mate to the rear IRC and opted instead for a 110/80x18 BT-45. The rear should wear out before the front and when it does I can buy the BT-45 to match in the rear. Ordered on Monday, just got a call its in and they mount for free when bot from them. But that will have to wait till I get back.

Ordered some RubberRenu from G4rce Enterprises and have been treating all the rubber bits as they will be called to service soon. Breather tubes especially, carb boots, etc.  I know there are some good DIY formulas for Rubber Renu type treatments. I'm just better with store bot stuff, as long as its reasonable.

See ya next week!

Made some progress and stirred up some mud. First pleasant surprise, while gone, the buddy I helped to clean out his late Father-in-law's garage, left me a care package on the breezeway. A box full of parts. Spark advancers, points, plugs, all kinds of gauges, oil pressure, fuel, temp, etc. But the creme was 2 original honda tool kits. Looks like a CB750 and maybe the one for his old CL77. A Honda bag with the number tag, of 6 brand NOW peg rubbers. I need 2, will sell the rest. AND... 12 NOS main bearing shells still in the wrappers. I think I can use them.

So I got the front wheel trued finally. There is a real good FAQ on this so I wont say much more. Only that aluminum rims true up a lot easier than stock steel ones, if you didn't know.

Got it to within .25mm in and out and side to side.

Mounted it up on the fork, the 18 will look a lot better than the 17 which didn't fit and the original 19 which was Huge:

Mocked up the brake brackets, and they fit the 18" wheel. That was the big unknown.

had to trim down some unnecessary bits, it will be cleaner overall.

But here's the bummer. Somewhere in the last 10 years, i have mixed up some parts. I originally had my homemade dual disc setup on this bike for many years. Everything fit fine. The 2nd side needed the spacers we all know about, but no problem there. But now, the 2nd disc and bracket don't come near lining up. About 11mm off.

Could be the fork legs, more likely the hub is a different one. Anyway, I'll get Saldana to machine the darn thing until it lines up. It'll cost a few bucks, but i ain't turning back now.

Hope to get to the tire store tomorrow and get the new BT54 mounted. Then I can disconnect the whole front end and roll it into Saldanas for the fork brace/fender mount, the fender, and now the brake bracket sizing up. If past is any indication they'll turn it around quickly.

The engine goes up on the bench next.

let me get this straight, you are running an 18 front and a 17 rear?

I am thinking that this will be the way that I end up going with my suspension swap. I will be watching to see how it performs.

Yes. The original plan was to drop to a 17" front as well. I've seen it down elsewhere. But on a stock fork there just isn't enough room to mount the brakes. The ones I've seen probably had wider GL front ends. The more I looked at the 17 the more it looked out of place, so I'm glad about being forced into the 18".

Later models had 17" rears anyway, so I'm not breaking any ground there. The front will be a 110/80x18. A lot less carcass than a 110/90x19. So it ought to feel a lot lighter and turn in nicely.

Hmmm...curious...I know that mine had (and soon will be again) a lot less clearance between the pivot and the fork, like it was right up against the fork leg. That would take some of the distance out. Also, the angle between the floating arm and the disc has always been steeper on the right side setups. That's OK: it just wears the pucks at a little more of an angle.

Do you, by chance, have the later model Tee-style hangers available? They will fit the same floating arms, are smaller, and need no adapting at all to bolt onto the earlier forks. (Look in the Book at the Front Wheel and Brake section for details.)

definitely keep me posted on how the bike feels once you get her out on the road, I plan on going the same route. Also, if you wouldnt mind taking some good shots of how the bike sits with the 18 and 17 I would greatly appreciate it. I was originally thinking about going with 17's but have reconsidered for the same reasons cosmetic reasons that you have stated. I am doing a 1000rr frontend swap and building my own swingarm so I can run a 120/70R18 in the front and a 180/55R17 in the rear. I couldnt find any good sticky tires in these sizes for 19 and 18 inch rims so i figure If i just downsize both by 1 inch i should be able to keep the same proportions, but be able to find better tires.
