Worked hard, mostly cleaning parts, dang that takes forever. Brake calipers:

Put the dang pistons in backwards, but since they were clean they popped out easily with air:

The new pads were painted a pretty black which kept them from going into the caliper at all. Chucked them up and wirebrushed off the paint.

Not much to see, but we're cranking on.

Oh yeah! That's at my buddies house, he had that CL77 in a spare bedroom. He used to play bass in bands back in the 70s, so what ever you see is probably what you think it is.

Something I learned (the hard way) about removing the paint on those brake pucks: they rust easily if they are the EBC brand.  >:(
I took them out about a month later and wiped some grease on the metal to slow it down. It went all winter now with just a bit of surface rust.
If they are EBC pads, I have one of those ASK-1 kits to help keep them from squeaking, if you need it.

HM: They are the offest of offbrands. They were still in blisterpacks in my parts box, bot at an unknown time in the past. I'm sure now that you mention it they will rust. I'll treat them with some phosphoric acid based rust preventer. No thickness or residue left behind.

They were originally black that's correct. Years ago I polished them out, don't remember how I got the black off. I think its anodizing. There was a little black left in the bolt holes, I tried to get it off with paint remover, but it wouldn't touch it. So a sandpaper wheel on a dremel did it.

Sure don't remember doing the main body of the caliper tho, it was a long time ago. Knowing myself I don't have the patience to have sanded the whole caliper. Maybe i had someone else do it. I wanted the pre-K1 caliper look.

Once the black is off, they buff up like any aluminum.

The engine on the engine stand wrapped in white plastic trash bags is the engine for Phaedrus II. The engine on the floor is for the 75F I have that will be a cafe racer. I have a set of Yoshimura 2 ring slipper pistons from my 70s era roadracer I want to press back into service for old times sake. THe rest of the engine will be (hopefully) as radical as I can make it. THe bike will have no attention to cosmetic issues at all. Not a rat on purpose, but more of a 70s era "sleeper".

Yeah, i'm surprised at the difference in the look, my K1 speedo from eBay for $75 is really tired. Face cracked, as most are, but even the black shell. How do they get scratched and dented sitting way up there out of the way? I pulled my old K2 instruments out of the box and even the black shell on them has scratches and dents.

I have one spare with a pretty nice looking black shell, are they interchangeable?  I want to buy the K1 faces from Yamiya, but they only come in pairs and I just need the speedo face, obviously.  Assuming its a perfect match for the OEM. I'd hate to take the tach apart to replace the face that's already perfect. In fact I probably wouldn't. The Yamiya face has to be close enough to OEM it wouldn't matter.

No problem... I'll hunt it down... It may show up here in a day or so. Glad I could finally get one through. Been having a hell of a time shipping lately.

It's my understanding that the calipers were anodized as well as the bar controls and some other stuff.

I would think that 300grit would take care of it pretty efficiently.

Calipers look very sexy polished btw... 8)

G'Day Ron, yeah mate, K1 and K2 "bezels" (I think that's what they're called) are the same, to my knowledge. I'll find out shortly as the other K1 speedo I bought on EBay (if it ever arrives) has a damaged one, and I'll try to use a good K2 item to repair it. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Almost 2 weeks since a thing done. Did some research, sold some parts on eBay, but nothing material till today. Brakes nearly sorted, stands nearly sorted. Pictures at 11. (or sooner) Gotta cut grass before it rains.  For now, both wheels on the ground. Front end looks long but is only 3/4 inch longer from bottom of lower tree to top of lower leg. That was to make up for the 17" wheel, which is now an 18" front wheel. The rear is lower too so that contributes to the front end look. That can always be modified later. My biggest concern was that the side stand would still work and it does.

Second concern was that the Centerstand would work, and it still does.

The rear wheel is a bit further off the ground, making it a heft, but I can live with it. The shocks are 12.75in, many replacements are 13.25, and i could use a taller tire, if it comes to that. For now, no chopping and welding of stands.

So I had a fully functioning dual disc set up. But somewhere over the last 15 years of the parts just sitting around, I got something mixed up and upon reassembly, the addon caliper wouldn't line up with the disc. Rather than discover what I've done (probably swapped a hub) I've opted to make it fit. So first step is to cut down a lug from the fork leg. By removing about 3/8 inch, it will bring the caliper 2/3 of the way. I thot it would need a machine shop, but then I thot, what about a hack saw? I taped off the fork leg to protect it from scratches and went to work.


Amazingly, I made the cut nearly perfectly. Here's the lug I cut, the leg is very soft aluminum. The lug above gets a spacer. The bracket needed additional relieving to clear the fork leg, done with a grinder and file. It mounts flat and swings clear.


 Now I'll have the machine shop chew on the caliper a bit and it will line up perfectly.

You can see how the caliper bracket is not in the same plane as the disc.

Next is a trick many of you know, but a few may not. To remove and install a sidestand, or centerstand, spring, move the stand to the position which stretches the spring the most. For the sidestand that's about 4 oclock.

Then push shims into the coils. Some say pennies work. I used strips of alumium flashing.
Then when you move the stand to its down position the spring is easy to remove or put back on.

From some parts sales and OT, the treasury is in good shape. Time being more important than money, at least for now, I'll send my tank to Boyers Tanks to be treated and primed.

My buddy has THursday off, so we'll remove the entire front end en masse and haul to Saldana Racing Products. They'll make the fork brace/fender mount, modify the caliper and make a mount for the air fork filler.

Then... the engine.
