Gotta admit that CM400 fender is great looking. Nice factory edge all around and nice contour to the leading edge.  It is not available from Honda, but eBay has some fine specimens, or some not so fine depending on what I'd pay. There is a "Guaranteed Perfect Condition" for $85. I'd pop for that if it would fit. Width is the issue and I've asked for a measurement..

I'm pretty sure you told me about the Honda 400 fender before. I think it wasn't impressed upon me to look at the CM over the CB. I own a CB400T and its a 19". I looked at all the other CB models and they are all 19". Since there are a lot of CBs before the "CM" comes up in the alphabetical listing at motogrid, I must've missed it.

As to what I've got, I used to get the same comments on the bobbed stock fender, either it sucked or it was cool. I kinda like it. It rolls forward about another 2 inches from the picture, so that improves the look a bit. Nice thing is, i can hang any fender i want from the fork brace, so its an easy thing to change.  Curious how did you mount it to your bike?

Thanks for the comments always appreciated!  :D

G'Day Ron, I did the same trick you did, I ground out the rivets and used the brace from the original 750 fender. From memory, the hole spacing is different, so you'll have to find a way of filling the holes, I just brazed them up and had the fender re-chromed. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I got to wondering, and thinking,  that's prolly how you did it. Neat.

Shame the speedo cable grommet is on the wrong side on the CM fender vs the CB350F fender. But like you say, I could weld it up and rechrome.

Ecosse: If you wouldn't mind. The clamps on my fork brace limit my space to 4"+ maybe depending on the crown of the fender. An eBay seller told me the CM400 fender measures 4.5", that's without the bracket as it comes off anyway. Too close to spend a lot of money not knowing if it will work,  as the CB350F fender fits perfectly. Its blade is sub 4" wide.

There is some meat on the brace brackets that could be eliminated and maybe pick up a 1/4 or 2.

The CM fender would fit perfectly in the application mentioned by Terry, using the stock CB750 brace. But I'm not doing that.

If it turns out I don't like the bobbed front fender, I'll put the whole CB350F fender on. It looks like a stock CB750K2 fender, with a front and rear strut, but for 18". Can't fault that.

*sigh* i just spent i dunno how long trying to make lines in the photos indicating measurement points but decided to stop before i put my fist through the monitor.  >:(  ::)

so i'll post the pix and describe the best that i can instead.  ;D

i looked at three cm fenders from 3 different years and all appeared the same.

looking at the fender from the bottom: both the distance edge to edge (width) of the fender, measuring from the inside, and the distance between the left and right mounts (again from the inside) measure approximately 4 7/8".

looking at the fender in profile i measured the distance, center to center, between the mounting holes. that's 1 3/4". plus i think terry said it fit his machine.

overall length using the high tech method of running a string along the top is 26 1/4" tip to tip.

i have other measurements and can take any other you need. also, if i'm not clear please just ask.

Ecosse: Above and beyond the call of duty. 4 7/8 is definitely too wide. It would fit except for my fork brace clamps are in the way. That is a good looking fender though.

If I was real good with a cutter/grinder I could cut some cutouts that would fit around my clamps, but that would be for later.  Winter time. While there's still a chance to get rolling this summer I gotta go.

So I've got something I can live with, and I need to move on. Sodablast the MC tomorrow and maybe get the crankcases up on the bench.

Thanks again! I really appreciate it.

crap... i was wrong about the fender width. just rechecked my #'s and the inside width of the fender is just a touch under 4 1/4". sorry.  :-[

might be still too wide but figured i should correct.

i blame the heat. and a crumby household ruler. and gremlins!

oh! and all cm rims are 18" fwiw.

That puts it in the ballpark, still dependent on the crown of the fender. Nevertheless, its a back burner issue, possible winter upgrade.

Well we are still pushing ahead. Wanting to get a handle on what it could do, we spent the first hour or so with the soda blaster. Main thing was the MC. First black:

Then silver and clean throughout. I shot the blaster down the bore of the MC, got it shiny clean in moments. Hopefully it didn't hurt it. But the bore is just shiny and smooth, no scratches at all, so I think its more polished inside than anything.

Last week I proved the blaster could easily remove the yellow lacquer on old aluminum parts. I wanted to see what it could do to paint. Took an old CL450 tank. It went through the black topcoat, red original coat easily but in a 1/4 inch swath. It would take forever to strip a tank size item, but for hard to get places, pretty good.

End mess:

Thunderstorm washed it all away.

balance of day spent with brake calipers, polishing and cleaning. Hope to get an evening or two in the shop.

Sunday AM at church: Using this classic panel beaters tool, we flattened out some wavy areas of the used fender.

The fork brace clamps needed some more relief for the fender to snug up.

Almost finished, need to score the hardware but the placement is good. The leading edge was where the wavys were, now its virtually undetectable.

The carbs have some soda impacted in nooks and crannies. You can see here in the far left upagainst the slides. So that took some air pressure and wooden picks to dislodge.

Started popping off the float bowls. Seems I didn't drain them 15 years ago? Awful lot of varnish. This is the worst, the 2 outsides were nearly clean.

The carbs were standing on their heads, with the floats nearby. They tipped over and the throat of one intake landed on the float and put the neatest curved dent in the float.   :(

Z1 Enterprises has replacement parts, thank goodness. I don't think the 29 Smoothbores are being made anymore?
We got the sodablaster out and made quick work of the varnish. No toxic chemicals.

So now I have some questions. On Phaedrus I, I used these 29mm Smoothbore Mikunis. My memory is that they worked wonderfully. I haven't laid eyes on them in nearly 15 years. Now that I'm working on them, I see no way to synchronize them. I can't say for sure I ever did. Does anyone have experience with them?

PS: I've been selling a lot of stuff on ebay to build up the treasury. Takes time.
