Goldwing Issues friend on the road
« on: June 18, 2008, 10:00:30 PM »
Heyy All,
I have a friend passing through from Nebraska to Reno. Just outside denver he was experiencing a backfiring and popping on deceleration. We have it at my house and have been messing with it for a few hours.
What is happening is the #1 plug is sooty.
We swapped plugs and same thing. sooty #1 plug. Swapped 1 and 2 wire and #1 stays sooty. Messed with the sync and idle and took her for a spin. seem's to run smoother. get back and #1 is only half blacktop electrode and one side is clean other is black.
We gave up for the night and he is staying here.

Any suggestions would help.

As a guess, I'd think maybe a jet vibrated loose and is sitting at the bottom of a float bowl.

Thak's just a pain to pull the carbs.
Would it still run smooth?
It isn't popping or backfiring now just black on one side.

Ok, another thought.  If it has CV carbs and air cut-off valves.  The diaphragm may have cracked.  These are there to stop backfire on deceleration (mixture enricheners) and a leaky one will upset the fuel mixture.

What year bike?

Oh, I'm no Goldwing expert.  But you asked for any suggestions. :)

Just outside of Denver coming from Nebraska hmm.  Think it could be altitude effecting the fuel/air mix?  If he's going back down soon, I wouldn't mess with it.

seem's to puff on the right side with a good turn of the trottle. It is only one plug the #1. If it was from the altitude would they all be kinda sooty?

Well after fooling with them and pulling them (the carbs) we didn't find anything out of the ordinary. He is on his way and hope it gets him to his destination.
