I was over at my brother-in-law's house today wrenching on his 79 750. The carbs were gummed pretty badly, so I showed him how to pull and clean them. After replacing the gas line and gas we finally got it running, but you could tell one or more of the the plugs was not firing. So I tap one of the pipes with my hand and is was cold. I tap the second pipe and it was cold. I tap the third pipe and it was cold too. Maybe they were not heated up yet? Then (like the moron I have proved myself to be) I grabbed (not tapped, GRABBED) the fourth pipe! Yep, hot as it could be. So I was correct, some of them were not firing.

I had to have him ride my bike home because the second I take my hand out of cold water it burns like my dum bass is still holding that hot ass pipe. Looks like all of my fingers will be one big blister by morning.

I thought I would share my great moment of stupidity. Maybe next time I will earn an entry into the Darwin awards.

I lick my finger 1st,
if I get a sizzle I know its hot.

I did however burn my leg on Kathleens' CL350 last summer/ Just a quick ride in shorts

I had a dumbf*ck moment on Sunday..

A buddy and I took our boys to an arcade, later on the way home while driving I asked my son to see the Chinese Fingertrap he had gotten.

So I get it on my finger & tell him to put his in but it is too small. I tell him to try his thumb but I am impatient and he didnt do it quick enough. So I put both hands on top of the steering wheel and slid my other finger in.. and it stuck..

There was a light and intersection comming up I asked son to try to get it off. Just when it starts to release he stops, I yell at him to keep pushing, but it too late and now I am thru the intersection.. So I have to use a bit of force, tear it a bit, shoulda heard the WHINING..

I was just glad to get it off and that no cop saw me doing that...

754...I was seriously going to reprimand you for being an a-hole driver but you broke the bloody thing to pieces! ha, way to go! conquer all for the sake of the drive!

being a fire sign and a dragon sign i supposedly have some sort of double dragon or double fire astrology weirdness... i like fire... fire good, burns bad. for some reason i keep having to relearn that.

I saw a laser thermometer somwhere on line a few weeks ago for not a lot of bucks.

You point it at each pipe till you get a red dot on the pipe, the temp comes up the laser and gives you the temp in a little window.

that the guys that use the temp things on the pipes, never seem to troubleshoot quickly anyway..??

Its knowledge & method.. not "Quickie Fix in a Can"..or Electro-Gadget of the Month"......

I actually just found this out this week, but the Darwin awards are always awarded posthumously. So we are all safe.

I did that 30 years ago on my first new Honda, CB450. I had been doing some work on it and thought that the pipes appeared to be shaking. The bike had been idling about 10 minutes and without thinking reached up and grabbed the pipe to check if it was loose. It wasn't loose but boy, was it hot! Spent the rest of the afternoon alternating my hand from a bowl of ice water to holding it in front of the air conditioner!

Yeah I think everybody does it once.

An old Radial engine mechanic trick...and a whole lot cheaper than a Infrared Thermometer.....

Chalk...plain ole' colored chalk.

Red is my favorite.

Put a stripe on each pipe...watch the heat burn it white.

Any pipe that doesn't change the chalk color is cold.

Think it would read oil temps? Would be a nice device to measure changes in op. temps when doing mods.

Speaking of stupid though... how about putting the bike down on the side stand that you haven't put down? Anyone else for that particular stupid move? I myself have managed that twice (once with an audience).

SHE was not impressed with my stupidity, but SHE was impressed with my strength and cat-like reflexes!

I, though, was feeling my exertion later that night.

Man, that's a hurt that will stick with you a while. I last did it in September -might have been August. It is still vivid in my mind whenever I am doing anything around the pipes.

Hope you heal fast. Feel better Cleveland. And Congratulations on your upcoming(unless I missed it) wedding. And the new place. Next time I come up that way, I'm bringing my SKS and other goodies and I wanna go shoot. I was pleasantly surprised to see you posting on survivor's board.

Sounds like you missed an opportunity. You should have explained that you forgot the stand cause you were thinking of/was distracted by her.

Just wondering. How many times can you forget the stand before being officially stupid. Not that I'm making any admissions, mind you.

A guy I know told me he'd been drinking, pulled up to a red light, forgot to put his feet down and just fell right over. He always had great tales of stupidity.

Heard that one several times. But one guy from my past, had a DWI conviction cause he did it at and intersection where a cop car was also waiting for the same light. "Miss one little detail the man get all over you", he said.

Oh yea, I still have a couple cases of ammo so that will make for good shooting.
