First Issue Out: Motorcyclist-RETRO
« on: June 19, 2008, 11:45:17 PM »
Just picked up a copy of Mitch Boehm's first issue of Motorcyclist RETRO.

All SOHC 4 folks should check it out [Mitch was posting to SOHC 4 a little earlier in year..to get feedback for his venture into this RETRO format].  In Mitch's introductory comments: "Welcome to The Show" he gives very credible, interesting explanation of why he went with this format after publishing in bike mags for over 20 years. Think many SOHC 4 members would agree with his sentiments, purposes in focusing on these old, classic bikes.

Content of mag seems like it could use a little more fleshing-out.  But for first issue it's quite good.

All here..will appreciate extensive coverage of Honda 750 4's.  Two articles: Summer of '69..and Biography of "Mr. CB 750..Vic World".  For any Sandcast fans out there..this last article is a must.

They are also looking for future articles, pics to accompany..especially "period pics" taken with actual 60's thru early 80's bikes with owners.

So check it out on news stands now.  Apparently comes-out only quarterly..@ $7.99 a pop!  But well worth the read..also supporting this worthy cause for all classic and SOHC 4 devotees. This mag seems like a perfect compliment to the interests, purposes of SOHC 4 owners.

E-mail address for further info is listed as: classicmail@sourceinterlink.com.

I agree with ya. I was a Books A Million the other day, saw the magazine, picked it up and looked at it. Have to admit that I wasn't too sure about it at that time ans I was in a bit of a rush. As I think about it though, all things considered (the cost vs the content vs how often published & the fact that we have been wanting to see the Vintage Japanese bikes covered in mags), I'm going back and pick one up. Gotta give them a chance, right? ;) I DO hope they make it too! 8) There was some folks who published a magazine for and about the old Indians, about 10yrs ago (I think). I started buying them and much to my dismay, they stopped producing them after a while. Hope this one doesn't go the same way. :-\

Okay, I had to go to town this afternoon and so I went back by Books A Million and picked up a copy. Supposed to sell for $7.99 plus tax and I got it for $7.86 total cost! ;) My daughter had one of their  discount cards and they pulled up the info and let me use it to get a bit of a discount. ;D  I remember when the Honda CB750 hit the streets along with the Kawasaki MachIII 500 Triple. I was stationed in Japan in the Air Force and was Awestruck, when I actually saw my first 750 Four! 8) ;)

So...

To keep this thread going for a while..

how many have picked-up a copy of Motorcyclist-RETRO yet?  Surely more than the few who posted here.

It's still on the stands folks!  This is also a rag/venue that supports the goals, interests of most SOHC 4 members.

It's pricey..yeah.  Needs improvement yeah.  But if we are more than just lip-service about our old Honda's, et al..or just on these Forums to stoke personal egos..then there needs to be more dialogue..and support for this stuff.

I mean..Hell..if some of these threads can go on for 10 pages about essentially nothing more than personal rants..then surely something as substantive as a magazine about the very thing we are about..can generate more activity than this..right?

I picked an issue yesterday at Books A Million for $7.99. Pricey for a magazine but it's about as market specific as I could ask for. The next issue comes out in September and they won't have subscriptions available until next year according to the mag. Great read with lots of frameable pictures.

Got my copy from MRieck on thursday and finally had a chance to read it cover to cover last night at work...I must say i like the way the mag is laid out especially that tech section at the end. Def worth the money for the first issue.

So if I don't engage in discussions about and purchase this overpriced magazine then I'm not really a supporter of classic motorcycling? ???

This was when Mitch first contacted our forum.

I'm also coming to this thread late in the game (just signed up), but can shed a little light here....

Of the four factory CB750s (not CRs....the CR moniker reflected kitted bikes with kit parts, not whole motorcycles) built back in early '70 for Daytona, only one has been proven to still exist. It's in France, and one of the two bikes shipped there after Daytona for endurance-race use by Honda France.

I have hi-rez images of one (a right-side-shift machine) right after it was uncrated at American Honda in Gardena. The detail of the images is stunning.

Two years ago, Motorcyclist sent Patrick Bodden, Bob Hansen and Bob Jamison to Paris to check on a bike owned by a collector who claimed to have one of the originals...

Although they couldn't confirm it was THE Mann or Bryans bike (or one of the others), they did confirm that various engine and chassis parts of the bike did indeed come from one of the four factory machines. Which is significant considering how elusive this portion of Honda's mechanical history really is.

We've got pix and an amazing bundle of notes on the Paris bike, the trip and the machine in question, and will publish them at some point in Motorcyclist Classic - our new classic/vintage magazine - when we get things organized and the story written in full.

Anyway, I'm in touch with Hansen and various Japanese Honda R&D engineers (who worked on the CB project in the late '60s) on some of the more important details of the story, and we're hoping to lay to rest some of the wild CR/Mann/Replica BS that's been floating around these last decade or so.

Thanks for your time....

We?  As in us?  No, of course not.  However it is nice to see then encourage it, because it may contribute to the number of vintage bikes on the road.

I am going to be selling me CB200T.  Why?  Because I have had it for a while and I haven't had more the a couple un-focused hours to work on it with everything else I have going on.  Too many irons in the fire I suppose.  :-[

I apologize if I misinterpreted your intent, Ichi, but your statement:

if we are more than just lip-service about our old Honda's, et al..or just on these Forums to stoke personal egos..then there needs to be more dialogue..and support for this stuff.

By not purchasing or discussing this magazine you've labeled my participation on these forums as "lip service" and "stroking personal egos".  If that's not "parental admonishment", then I don't know what is.  Perhaps it's not an oversensitivity to differences of opinion as much as it's a lack of sensitivity to the fact that others can and will have differing opinions and possibly don't enjoy being painted with such a broad brush.

Picked up the first issue and enjoyed it much. As much as I do like all the Brit magazines seemingly only focusing on Brit bikes of the early 20th century  MR is a refreshing read.  Price is not a big deal... to a point. I've done dumber things with my money. I think it's a good first effort and I feel if they use 'Octane' as a yard (metre?) stick they'll do well.

Ichi,

Sorry for going so far off-topic with my ranting.

I appreciate when new publications come out that are focused on classic motorcycling, but at the same time I don't feel obligated to purchase something simply because it's marketed at me.  My hobby/obsession (and I'm sure that of most others) isn't going to be diminished by how well a magazine does or doesn't do, but it is nice that we're seeing more outside support for our collective passion.

I may pick up a copy if I come across one to see what I think, but at least for the time being Motorcycle Classics is doing a good job of filling that void.

My own opinion of this magazine is that it's pretty good for a first issue. I'm hoping that it will develop some as time goes on. Myself, I've been kinda wishing that there was one that catered more to our sort of bikes. The Motorcycle Classics is a pretty good one too, but I would just like to see one on the Vintage Japanese bikes, ya know? Just have to wait and see and hope for the best.  ;)

I'd love to give an opinion.  I can't find a copy.  There are heeps and gobs of magazines at the local Books-A-Million just not one of these.  It was nice of Mitch to tell us they were going to have this mag, it would have been nicer if he had said"Heads up- It'll hit the stands next week" or something like that.
