Crank and Rod Bearings - Opinions, please
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:17:32 AM »
So, as I was moving, my Dad was helping me pack up all the parts to the 750 engine I'm rebuilding. When I had him pack up the main crank bearings (each one indiviually wrapped and marked where they went), he seems a bit shocked that I had plans on reusing them if they checked out to be within specs.

This has gotten me to thinking. Should I just buy new crank and rod bearings and just toss the old ones? Or are they reusable provided they are not worn out (only 28K miles on the bike when parked)?

What would you all do?

I would replace since I already had the engine apart.  That way you have no worries for many miles.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)
        1981 CB650c Custom with '79 engine (wifes)
        1981 CB650 engine
        2004 HD XL883C Custom
        1977 Yamaha XS750D (in progress)
Then 1972 CL175
        1964 Yamaha YGS-1T

If they look good go ahead and plasti-gauge them to be sure before reusing em. I know I have changed some that didn't need to be through the years just because the thing was opened up. That's not many miles if the engine has had regular oil changes etc. etc.

He's thinking of car parts that are dirt cheap so you change them anyway, you can only get the shells from Honda and are probably looking at $200+ for a full set so if they look OK and srec OK use em
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
