CAN ANYONE CREATE A NEW WIRING HARNESS?
« on: June 20, 2008, 08:15:35 AM »
I have a 78 CB 750F and need a new wiring harness.  I cannot locate a new one anywhere.  Can anyone here manufacture one?  If so how much would it cost?

Hope this is not a stupid question, but there are a lot of really talented vintage bikers here!

There was a thread here w/ a fella from Denark or Norway, rebuilt a 750 from some turds that were bolted together.   His harness was in bad shape so he built one from scratch.  I'll see if I can find it.

I posted on this subject a while ago and TwoTired advised that the standard automotive wire that could be used is not as good a conductor as the original honda wire.

What about doing it yourself?  Or modifying one for a similar model to work?  PartsNMore sells one for the K here:

https://www.partsnmore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=BASK&Store_Code=1&Action=ADPR&Product_Code=24-4001&Attributes=Yes&Quantity=1

Maybe you could contact them to find their source.

I wish that 78 and 79 were the same.  I bought a 79 from ebay and it was different.

Thanks though!

79 ought to be a DOHC not one of ours. From aged memory a 75-77 should be modifyable without too much agro as it has the ignition between the clocks as well, also a 77/78 550 might be adaptable for the same reason.

I have rebuilt a loom and built from scratch, the hard part is the multi connectors that go to other items like switches as they tend to be Honda only and not available,

Have you tried the usual on-line old parts people:-

www.davidsilverspares.co.uk
www.cmsnl.com
www.westernhillshonda.net

although if they have one i would take a stiff drink before asking how much!!!

I replaced all of the bullet connectors on mine with new ones from www.vintageconnections.com.  Worked great, and I haven't had a problem in over 2 years.

Now, where's that wood.... ;D ;D

I did the same with worn out connectors that fell out of each other and made lousy connections.
I'd redo your old one, there's enough slack wire in the loom to strip wire back and add new connectors.
If you need to add short additional wires, same colour if you can get it.
Unless your bike has had a major fire that completely coozed the loom this would be your cheapest option, on the other hand for a mere $10,000 plus air freight I'm sure I can knock you one up. ;D

I ordered one of those partsnmore harnesses for my K3 after tearing down my KO one to replace some connections and re-tape it. Found green and red wires that were sorta melted so out came the soldering iron to splice in replacements. Took a few evenings. I thought I didn't want to go thru that again til I opened the box from partsnmore. That box open for about three minutes before it, too, was re-taped. It looked so cheap I had to put it back immediately. Spend the time, not the return shipping.

I'm making my wiring harness from scratch for my project bike (non-Honda).  Bought a bunch of different color wire and am planning the diagram.

Biggest challenge is finding all the different color wiring.  The bullet connectors can be bought from Z1 Enterprises as people have mentioned.  Mikesxs.com also has them, along with many different block connectors.

Too bad there isn't a similar site to Mikesxs.com (XS650 exclusive) for the Honda's.  He sells new aftermarket wiring harnesses for all the model years for $80 each.  My home-built harness will cost more than that, but will be perfect for my bike with no extra wires and everything going to where it needs to (I moved stuff).

As an owner of both (XS650 & CB500) I have said this many, many times.

Mike's is a gift from the gods!

Considering the recent and aparently insane collectibility of the CB750, I'm really surprised that someone hasn't set something up like this already. Hopefully it's just a matter of time.
