« on: June 20, 2008, 05:22:49 PM »
I am just curious what the factory 1/4 mile times were for the 78 cb750k. Anybody know?

I saw this article. They list the F model times but not the K. I'll let you know if I find it also. Did a google and didn't have any luck.

According to the Honda Shop manual, the K7 has a primary ratio of 1.708, the K8 has a primary ratio of 1.989.
The change ought to make the 78 faster in pickup than the 77, though I have no quantification of that.

About 5 weeks ago I took my 78 750k to the Bowling Green, Ky drag strip. Made 6 passes. First was not to good - 14.3 at 93 mph, last was 13.4 at 98.8 mph. The bike had more but I didn't push as hard as I could have, plus my reaction time was horrible. My bikes not stock, 4 into1, pods, small 1/4 fairing and approx 60 lbs lighter than stck, so it should really do better.

what parts are you figuring in to lose 60lbs?

what parts are you figuring in to lose 60lbs?

Removed tach, center stand, chopped both fenders, stock air box, center light cluster, stock foot pegs replaced with cbr 1000rr rear sets, stock seat cut down = 5 lbs lighter, 4 into 1 exhaust, drilled front brake rotor, all emison stuff, misc. brackets, very small turn signals and tail light, changed head light brackets, replaced brake arm stay will alium. piece. My final weight lose was based on stock dry weight of 508 lbs. and then weighted on a certified scale showing 464 lbs.? minus 2-1/2 gals. of gas - 15 lbs and 3.7 quarts of oil at 5.3 lbs. comes out to 443 lbs. Each item I replaced was weighted with a digtal scale to determind weight savings and the final weighting confirmed it. The actual numbers might be off a little based on weight gas and oil as I didn't write all the numbers down but they are quite close. To lose much more weight would start to cost more in replacement items(read custom items) that I can't really afford/justify. Another 7 to 10 lbs. could be gained if I remove the electric starter and lightened the stator some.

That is a realistic time.

Regardless of what they did in a magazine test, that is what most riders will get out of it.

I don't have a tach on my bike so it's hard to really judge how much I'm reving on take off. It would probably help if I had a tach in that respect, I just don't know how much. Each pass I made was quicker than the one before. But getting to the same times as a professional is not really feasible <sp? for me I don't think, but I did want to get to 100 mph. Oh well!

Those are not bad times at all for a first time out ekim. That 13.4 was as quick as Chris's best run with the old 736 motor  :o :o :o

Like Juha (leino) said, the reaction time don't make any difference to the ET.

Keep at it and your times will improve, practice makes perfect.

I realize reaction time doesn't effect ET but they do list it on your time sheet, and it looks bad when your still on the line and the other guy is 30 feet down the track already!!

Yes it dose look bad but you will only get better by practicing.

When I first tested the 175 earlier this year I was in the sixteens on my first run, it came down to a 14,7 after 5 passes.
The next time out I started with a 14.9 and then a 14.4 and finished up with the same as you ;D ;D ;D a 13.4 at 102mph.

Each time you run make notes so you can refer back to things like weather, temps, humidity, air pressure and relative air density, these things all affect your performance on the day.
Make notes of your rear tyre pressure, are you running into a head wind or did you have a tail wind helping you.

Look on the timing slip for your 60 foot time, this is the only place you will notice a difference relative to your performance.
Once you have past that mark it's all plain sailing, all your other times along the track should be more or less the same, get the first 60 foot right and you're home and dry.

Practice practice practice. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D and don't forget any RT beats a red light :D :D :D :D :D  sorry Frank ::) ::) ::)

Now your making me feel bad Sam, a 13.4 @ 102 and your riding a 175. :( True I never did red light, but I never beat anyone either. But I was the only bike there that was older than a 2003/2004 model. Those 600 crotchrockets are pretty quick, and those two Hayabusa's there were just plain fast. 8) There we're about 5/6 guys there - probably early 20's, and I don't think they had ever seen an older sohc4 before, they were really looking hard at the old Honda!!!  ::)

To some of us, that is still a NEW Honda 750, cuz it is the last they made... ;)

Keep practising at the drags, its fun & very cheap with your bike.  We can help out. How are you coming off the line?, with that et, you are probably doing a good job of it..

Hey ekim, if it makes you feel any better,.... I've only made about 4 passes on Chris's CR when it had the stock motor and I didn't get anywhere near your times,.....I did a lot of wheel spinning though ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Given enough time on the bike and I'm sure it would have gone quicker with me on it but it takes PRACTICE.

Do like Frank said, give us some info about how you went about it, maybe we can throw you some helpful hints. ;)

Mine is just seat of the pants raceing, since I don't have a tach to go by. Hence it's kind of hard to tell you what all I did. The weather was warm - probably mid 80's but once the sun went down so did my times, but I was getting into the race groove again. I'm not really a drag racer, I just wanted to see what I could do. Like I said, the bike had/has more, but I didn't want to really screw up the engine. Don't know when or if I'll go back, but it was fun trying to be 35 again. I had a 650 Nighthawk back when and it was new with only 500 miles on the clock. At 100 miles I said the heck with it and got red line in 5 gears. I knew I was going to run the crap out of it and broke it in fast and hard. I got very close to PeeWee Gleasons 1/4 mile time for that bike when I gave up drag raceing. They were running ET brackets and I was running against big bikes with them spotting me time. It just wasn't as much fun. My last race for a trophy was against a GSX 1100 with nitrous and 4 ft wheely bars. He beat me to the finish line, by .01 of a second, but I actually ran a better breakout time than he did. He offer me the trophy after we talked and he saw my time and breakout times, but I said no he won.

I was ridding a completely stock 650 Nighthawk with approx. 500 miles on the clock that I bought new. The bike mag. said Gleason ran 107 mph at 12.45 et. I ran 107.5 mph and 12.7 + according to the clocks at U.S. 30 Drap Strip in Hobart,In. I only did it once, but that was good enough for me. That bike always ran good for me and I practiced doing hole shots alot.  12.9/13.1 was about avg. for me then on that bike. I looked but can't find the time slip yet, but I keep it because of being so close to PW's time(in my opinion), which I was quite proud of. That was 23 years ago tho and 20 lbs lighter.
