...I say buy it, then got through ITS to get u'r registration.  Ride it for a year, then take u'r chances at the DMV getting it registered in u'r state.  If u'r getting it for a song, you should be able to get that much or more when u got to resell it..titled or not...

...you don't get a title.  You get a Maine registration...since you don't have to have a title in the state of main for a bike older than a certain period, you get a valid registration and license plate in your name...registration expires in a year.  Then you take that to your DMV, and say I'm hear to register my bike.  Their response is "wheres the title"...then you proceed to explain what I just explained to you.  Will that work?  Maybe...maybe not...   :-X

I have titled many bikes in TN with this service.  The main problem I run into is if the bike has been registered in state in 10 years (They stay in the DMV system for 10 years then get purged).  Then when you go say hey I need to register, they say but its already in our system from someone else.

This is when it becomes complicated, but I have learned to just stick to the story of "I do not have any idea why its in your system, must have been sold out of state"  in the past 10 years.  Then the lady gives you the deer in the headlight look and gets the book for Maine laws and walks around about 10 minutes talking to their supervisors.  After 10 minutes or so they come back and say fine give me the money.  Then in about 2 weeks you get a title.

If it has never been registered in your state or has not been in last 10 years then its very simple.  I have probably done 15 bikes in the last 5 years or so and this system has not failed me yet.

I also live on the border of a Bill of sale state and have some relatives that live there.  They will title the bike with just a bill of sale  1983 or older.

ITS only titles bikes from 1974 and older, I doubt they would be able to do an 81 at all.

Get the bike for parts atleast.    No reason to let it go to a scrapyard for #'s.
18 grand and 18 miles dont make you a biker

well if i get it there will be parts for sale I am waiting to see if the seller takes my offer. I have an 80 so only some of the stuff will work on my bike....I was going to fix it and let my friend learn on it ...but it sounds like it would be better to part it.

I would take it for the parts. Tank prices are through the roof! I just sold one for $120, I saw one go for $290 and another $250. If that bike is complete, I could have sold half of it 10 times over with the parts requests I have got from Kijiji. prices are climbing higher and higher. I hope they go back down, I can't afford those parts anymore.

There's a guy parting out an '81 CB650C, I messaged him and he said he'd sell the tank for $55 including shipping to the continental US.  According to him it's in very good condition, he just doesn't have a key to the gas cap.

I'm not sure about that, here's what they say on the ITS web site. Maybe they just started doing newer vehicles?

I don't understand why they have 2 separate areas of the website to deal with 74 and older and 93 and older? How confusing :P

I agree completely. It's really poorly organized.
