How bad is too bad
« on: June 24, 2008, 02:43:12 PM »
My moto is my only form of transportation, and I just noticed (after it passed safety inspection only a week ago) that the front tired have wear on the sides, looks like it was flat and sat there and was pumped back up and left wear on the sides...  a good amount of splinters they don't look like they are a threat .  Is this a problem that must be fixed immediately?  or can I roll this way for a week?

The thing is that getting this legal I spent all my cash for a week.

Thanks for again answering my noob questions.

Wear on sides? Please post a pic if you can.  Also, is the side wall cracked?  Any idea of how old the tire is?

If by "splinters" you mean "steel bits that are sticking out of the tire that are supposed to be inside it", I sure as hell wouldn't ride on it, but that's me.

Get a pic.

The "Mr. Safety" part of me says don't ride it in an unsafe condition.

I'd have to see it to know for sure, but I'd probably ride it at low speeds(under 45 mph) and short distances(10 miles).

It is cracked a good amount but no steel or anything like that.  The Tire is maybe 3 years old or newer.  The first safty inspection the dude did not pass the tire the 2nd dude did.  I can't post pics right now.  I am getting a new tire real soon, I just hoped it was not a HUGE deal.  I travel 20 miles a day and never get over 50 miles an hour.

Its probably more than 3 years old if the sidewalls are cracking.  Find the DOT number on the sidewall, the last group of digits in the DOT code will tell you the tyre's age. (Post the code here if you're not sure)

Cracked sidewalls are a very bad sign of wear.  That tyre needs to be replaced pronto.

Tires are not something to skimp on. It really sounds like you should get a new tire ASAP even more so since its your front.

Unless you have a jacket that you really really want to test out its abrasion resistance...  ;)
