I had it figured out when you mentioned the hill.  When I hit 1/4 tank I go into find a gas station mode.  At least you didn't try to check the fuel level by looking into the tank with a lighter.  I don't know if that's a mechanic's urban myth.

I've had alot on my mind recently and have been taking pain pills for my hand.  I was trimming my sideburns in front of the bathroom mirror and when I was done and wanted to turn off the clippers, I reached down and tried to turn off the hot water.  Kinda like putting a book in the fridge.

The post title did not say it had to be bike related.

The plus side: wife #1 hated motorcycles, wife #2 likes motorcycles, so now we have 5.

Er, um... not a myth.  I've actually done that.  Bad idea.  Luckily the flames were easily extinguished and didn't suck back into the tank.   :o

Guess I'd sorta suppressed that memory.

In answer to your question: oil change and forgetting to put the drain plug in then wondering why the crankcase seems to need waaay more oil than the manual calls for. Only realising said mistake when the drain pan underneath overflows with old and new oil.....fark indeed. ::)
Been there, done that.  Only kicker was, I was at the local Walmart one night, and when I came out I noticed a full case of Quaker State 10W30 sitting in the bottom of a shopping cart sitting in the middle of nowhere.  Free oil!  Woohoo!  I guess that after dumping 4 quarts into the engine and then realizing that the drain plug was still out, I was being punished for not being the good citizen and returning the case of oil to the store????
Another DUMB thing was my wife's GrandAm wasn't charging the battery.  I pull the alternator after checking that I only had 11 volts when the car was running. Take it to AutoZone to get another one.  After they did a check on the old alternator and said it was OK, i thought that I wouldn't trust it because it could have something loose inside or something.  I buy the new alternator and install it.  Start the car.....11 volts!  WTF???  After doing further checking, I discover it would have been better to just clean and tighten the battery connection!  ::)

Keep them coming!!!

I feel smarter already :D

Did I mention I drove of with the disk lock still on my bike this week?  The lock was twisted so it didn't open anymore, had to grind it off. Then as I finally got the thing off, I went outside to  leave and locked myself out of the house. I had to climb two stories and get in throught the bathroom window.

Only thing that comes to mind lately was from when i was spray painting my Blazer...i had set the can of primer on the roof within the roof rack when i moved onto the color stage on the tail gate and my roommate needed a ride somewhere...well you guessed it..the primer can was on the roof still when we left...driving around town with it rolling around...and we were both stumped as to why we heard the sound of something rolling around in the back of the truck lol

Well here's a variation on the "naked flame to a gas tank" story. I worked at gas stations part time for many years as we are a "single income" family, and in Oz Liquid Propane Gas (LPG) is a really cheap alternative to gasoline, and at a lot of gas stations, we store the LPG in big tanks underground.

As part of a "console operators" (Bowser Boys, pump jockeys etc) closing down duties, you have to check the gas gauge (located under a manhole cover) with a special spark proof torch to report on daily sales. One of our sites had an incident where a console operator (a Pakistani student) suffered burns around his face, hands, and mouth, and esophagus and lungs, when he virtually inhaled a fireball caused by the gas sitting in the "well" somehow igniting.

He recovered, and when he was fit enough to be questioned about the circumstances of the gas fire, he swore that he hadn't used a cigarette lighter to illuminate the gauge, (the fire happened about 11pm) however, there was a functional "BIC" lighter found a few feet away from him, and the torch (with flat batteries) was still hanging on the hook in the shop, behind the counter. Kinda made me wonder how he intended to read the gauge without a torch?

Regardless, because Mobil couldn't prove that he did, in fact, use the cigarette lighter (he was a smoker, and his cigarettes, but no lighter was found in the shop behind the counter) to attempt to illuminate the gauge, they were forced to pay out almost a million dollars in compensation to their employee. After typing this, I can't decide now whether the console operator was dumb, or whether the law is..........  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Had a big night the other week & figured a ride the next morning would clear the head - no start, completely dead
an hour or so checking wiring etc then decide to move the bike out of the garage to the sunlight as it's warmer
  won't push backwards
must be in gear dickhead (no idiot lights on it)

I have a bad habit of knocking the killswitch to "OFF" at red lights. Then I like jumping on the kickstarter like maniac while cars behind me honk. After a few minutes I reallize the damn killswitch is OFF.   ???

I have a nasty tendency to leave my bike in gear before I jump on the kickstarter (neutral light doesn't work)...  I haven't dropped it yet because of this, though.  I fixed this problem by installing rearsets that block the kickstarter from operating ;D

In the habit of ALWAYS shifting to neutral as I park my bike in my driveway, so I don't typically even look at the neutral light.  I was late for work a month ago, jumped on the old girl, hit the starter button and whoom!  Bike lurches forward!  Fortunately since its a 350F I was able to catch and hold onto her before she touched the ground.  I still have nightmares.

Approaching red light, time for a downshift but....left foot is stuck?!?! I look down and see bootlace tied too long wrapped around shifter!!!! Inevitable embarrasing low speed dump upcoming, and panic, trying to disengage bootlace before stopping!!!! And then.....relief....as light turns green and I'm granted another mile to wiggle my left leg while I ride and successfully free my boot from the evil grasp of the shifter.
These days I always doubleknot my left boot and tuck the loops in next to my ankle, and I practice right foot down only stops.

I haven't done this one as I removed them from my Fatboy years ago when I had it
with the proliferation of "new boys" on their new Hardleys, have you noticed they all have these really long leather tassells hanging off their clutch & brake levers
I'm waiting to see one of these clowns when the tassells have wrapped around their hands or levers & they have to do a panic stop

Many many years ago when I had blagged myself into a plant mechanics job on a road project that paid loadsa money I was asked to do a roadside full service on a Terex push-pull Scraper. I had skimmed the maintainace instructions the day before. One of the duties to carry out was to check the hydraulic oil level by extending all the rams half way and reading off the spy glass on the side of the hydraulic oil tank. Well thicko here extends the rams all the way out and seeing the level is below the spyglass proceeds to replenish oil. A happy few gallons later the level just starts to appear. So just carry on filling I said to myself smugly. Another few gallons later the level is spot on. Right carry on with the rest of the service and whistle over to the operator's canteen that the Scraper's ready to go.
The poor sap jumped on the drivers seat which was situated immediately in front of the hydraulic oil tank, fired her up and roared off. As he's trundling down the road he starts to roll in all the rams........you got it; within seconds he, the cabin, the controls, the whole shebang were covered in hydraulic oil.
Top-up-Rob was my site name after that.

Learning to shift on an old Honda Big Red 3 wheeler, I was tooling around the pasture and decided to head off down the big hill to the river.  I learned that the atv had no brakes, and that I quickly confused upshifting with downshifting.  I ended up in fourth gear doing about 40 bouncing all over the place and crashing hard into the alders at the bottom of the hill.

On my 750F, I had some wiring issues which I believe I rectified with the splicing in of replacement harness bits the night before.  Off to work I go, down the hill from my house to the stop sign. The bike dies. I try starting it, and with the choke on it will sputter to life and then die.  Pissed off beyond reason, I push the bike up the hill to my house.  Pouring sweat in the driveway I look at the petcock and it is in the Off position.  Turned it on and she fired right up.  DOH!@!@@

At least twice...that I remember...over the last 40 years, I have run out of gas with the selector firmly in the "res" position. Of course when the bike starting dying and I put it there miles back I told myself ...."must not forget selector is on reserve".  ::)

You gotta watch BMW stands though, I've nearly let my K1100LT fall off the stand on an incline, and although the PO never crashed it, it fell off the center stand 3 times in the 13 years he had it, second time a bum kicked it over when the PO refused to give him a handout for "a cup of coffee", ($2900.00)

If that douchebag were to kick my bike over he'd be drinking a shepard's pie thru a straw. believe that.

Well, I did mine today. ::) I'd been kinda busy for a couple of weeks now and the past few days, I finally managed to be able to work some time in for my 80' CB750K w/ the sidecar. Figured if I could get it squared away, I could use it in place of the minivan for some of my runnings.

I ha just replaced the spark plugs on it and it wasn't sounding too bad (still needs some carb adjustment) and decided to take it up the street a bit and also determined what readjustments I needed to make on the sidecar mounting. Well, up the street I went, not very fast fortunately. I decided to put the rear brake on a little and prepare to turn around. That's when it happened. The brake pedal jumped a couple of times and I heard a "snap"! Using the front brake, I stopped it and checked to see what had happened. Then I saw that (somehow) the brake plate on the rear wheel did not have the plate retaining strap attached to it with that mount bole and the brake plate spun around, snapping the brake pedal rod. :-[

Now, I have to come up with one of those. ::)

Well, in a perfect world, this guy would have been an "ex-Bum". My mate is a gun nut, owns about 12 handguns of all calibers, anyway, he rode the BMW to a gun shop to buy some cases (he reloads his own) and you can legally park your bike on the sidewalk here in Melbourne, so he parked right outside the gun shop.

When he got off, this skinny little smack-head, covered in tatts and smelling like death, asks him for a couple of bucks for "coffee". (anyone ever see a drug addict drinking coffee?) My mate Pete says, "#$%*k off", and walks into the gun shop and starts talking to the owner, when they hear a "CRASH" outside!

Pete runs to the door and sees his bike on the sidewalk with gas running everywhere, and the little skinny turd is already about 100 yards away, running for his life! (literally) Pete chooses to pick his bike up, because he's 55 years old and really out of shape, and is worried someone will somehow drop a match or a butt and set his bike on fire. And that's how the bum kept breathing.................  :P
