cb400f "rearsets" on a cb500?!?
« on: June 22, 2008, 03:50:00 AM »
Am I the first to try this?!? It's a bolt on, but it looks a little off  :-\

It moved the pegs back nicely. The right side sticks out a bit and the kick starter is blocked...

You're right it is a good position just under the swingarm pivot, and directly under the riders ass (or mass!) Not uncomfortably rearward, just right IMO, you'll like the position.

Reweld the arm on the underside of the shift lever and invert the shifter arm too. (I used an aluminum Gixxer lever with some mods. It's all about weight reduction you know)

You can remove a substantial amount of meat from the 400F footpeg arm and not reduce strength.

On the right side heated and bent the 400F brake lever to fit "tighter"

Based on this thread I picked up a set on eBay and put them on my '76 CB550.

Contrary to that post, I didn't have to drill anything out, they bolted straight up.

The shifter is precariously close to the engine case. I'll have to watch to make sure it's not rubbing.

The kickstart is blocked now, I haven't seen a 400f kickstart lever to know what it looks like.

I cut off the footguard chunk of the right side so that it would bolt on with the kickstart lever attached.

Disassembled and painted:

Right side old vs. new position:

Modified 550 brake lever:

Brake lever installed:

The 400f rearsets block the kickstart on a 400f as well. That's why the right-side peg flips up and out of the way. I currently have a 550 kickstart lever on my 400, and it works fine. It just looks dumb and rubs against my shin... anyone got a 400f or 350 kickstart to sell?

This is a great mod, I love the factory look. I'll have to keep an eye out myself for a set of CB400 rearsets. (Feel free to PM me if you want to get rid of some.)

I have a kickstart lever off a '78 CB750F I'm planning on using after I do the swap, I've been told they swing out a little more than the 550's.  If I remember correctly it's close to the same length (it's in a box somewhere) I hope to get the pegs this week sometime so I guess I have to dig it out soon.  I also plan on having a metal shop close to where I work tweek either the 400 or the 550's brake pedal.

The 400F brake pedal (above) needs two bends to bring it in tighter to the clutch cover. I also used 600F3 footpegs and an 86 GSXR aluminum shift lever, which directly fits in place of the 400F piece (except for the linkage rod thread)

It should be noted that even with the right peg folded up, the 550k kickstart lever hits the peg. I'm looking for a 550f lever, as I believe that should solve my problem.

I have a 550 kickstart lever that works on a folding-peg 400f. PM me if you're interested—though I'll have to wait till next week to pull it off my bike. Snow expected in Tahoe...

A 550f kick lever works with the 400f rearsets.

550f as in Four, or as in a '76 or '77 (which is the F model)?

EDIT

Looked at the model guide and I see the difference between F and K models, but what's different about the kickstart? If I was searching ebay, they're not always very clear about year or model designation.
Any pics of the difference? I see some that have a straighter looking shaft and some with a pronounced curve at the bottom. Which one would I need?

There was both a K and an F in '76 and '77, and there was never a non-four 550.

Curved. That's from the CB550 "F" model.

I put mine in a vice and hit it with a hammer a few times to bend it outward so it wouldn't hit the side cover.

I ground the back side of the heim joint "ball" stud, punched it out of the link I had (which had an angle to it already), turned the link around and reattached the heim joint ball stud on the other side.  Lots more clearance.

Anybody have an issue with the side stand being in the way? Set mine up this morning and when the side stand is up it blocked me from getting my foot below the shift lever.

Is your toe is bumping that little rod used to put the kickstand down? Mine was, so I cut it off and re-welded where it wouldn't interfere with my foot:

One question I don't see addressed: What do you do about the rear brake switch/spring? Can you still activate the rear brake light with the 400F pegs/brake lever?

You could easily do what I've done for my CB350F/400F hybrid proj.  I've used parts from the FZR600 rearset with Lockhart Phillips pegs and stock Honda return springs.  Connecting rods have yet to be completed but that will be easy.  On the brake side, I've taken a cutoff wheel to the stock brake pedal and cut off the pedal leaving the mounting hub.  A simple tab was then welded to the hub.  You can then buy Heim joints in LH and RH thread.  Simple cheap solution really.

On your bike you have the same passenger peg tabs that I had on the 350F frame.

That's a cool set-up, but doesn't really address the brake switch spring with 400F pegs.
I could run "true" rear sets and do what you're doing, but I'm hoping to make the 400F stuff work on my CB500 and keep it all Honda, for now.

I'm sure if I studied it long enough I could figure something out, but I was hoping there'd be someone here who's already been there and could show me.
