ignition problem
« on: June 22, 2008, 01:18:32 PM »
I have a couple of questions regarding ignition.

Bought a 1974 750 about two weeks ago and decided to check the points/timing and replace the plugs while I await my carb tuner to arrive in the post.

Turns out the timing was spot on, so I made no adjustments - the guy that sold me the bike must have adjusted it just before he let it go. Last week I was having intermittent problems with cylinder #1 not firing
or at least it was colder than the other three - but has been ok again for the passed week of riding.

on removing the plugs #1 and #2 were carbon fouled #3 and #4 were nice egg shell colour

I replaced the plugs and now #1 pipe is alot colder again - I should note that I noticed two things when changing the plugs --

1 and 4 were screw plug caps and 2 and 3 were not - the screw caps however do not want to screw on all the way down
and can be pulled off with not too much effort - should they screw firmly all the way down?

Also the HT lead with #1 written on it was plugged to #4 but the lead was too short to put it in number #1
I traced the wire back and it did go to the furthest left (clutch side) of the 'junction box' thingy.
How important is this that it is in number one?

I believe they should screw all the way down.

1 and 4 can be switched. They fire at the same time, it does not matter
The same for 2 and 3

cheers mate, guess I'll buy some replacement plug caps to be safe, can I fit any or is there a certain type?

Strange thing is that when I hold the HT lead down with my hand on #1 to make sure it's
contacting it still doesent seem to make any difference. Its definitly getting power to the lead though
because the strobe light works when I attatch it to the lead.
