Bike starting/coil questions
« on: June 27, 2008, 09:34:17 AM »
1978 Cb 750F.

First of all I just put another set of coils on the bike (5.00 swap meeet ones quit working).  I know the old ones were bad because it now will at least run.

Some of the number stickers are off of the new coil wires (and old one does not match the ones that are there on new) so I cannot tell which plug each wire goes to.  Is there a diagram somewhere?

Next question.  Both coil packs are 12V, so either should work-correct?

The last question.  I have to cross the starter solenoid with a screwdriver because the starter button APPEARS (it did once) to have quit working.  How do you test the switch on the handlbars?

But GL1000 have a ballast resistor as they are not 12v coils

Each coil fires two plugs at the same time.  Each cylinder gets 2 sparks during each cycle, one during compression and one during the exhaust stroke. Make sense?
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

so remove the balast resistor... and wah lah.... 12v coils they say 12v on them just as do the 750 coils... and they put out MORE Volts and they are a factory piece and look good....

GL1000 coils are 6V coils that withstand 12V during start up mode.  The ballast resistor reduces the power to 6v for normal run operation.   It is bypassed during electric start.

You can expect shorter life from the coils due to running hotter than designed.  And, if you are using the stock points set up, shorter point life, and faster changing of point timing, due to the higher currents involved.

Unless you've increased the spark plug gap, they aren't getting higher voltage at the spark plug.  The coils may have a higher potential, but it won't be realized unless the plug gap is increased.

Thanks TT I knew what i meant but couldnt find the words!
I know 500/550 coils run without ballast connected wont run a GL1000 for long cos i tried it

Usually the left coil fires 1 and 4 and the right coil fires 2 and 3, but they can be reversed with no problems if the plug wires fit and the correct points wire is connected to the correct coil.
