anyone have wild parrots in their backyard?
« on: June 24, 2008, 06:48:41 PM »
As you can tell from my avatar I love parrots, sadly none in my yard (Canada). I was just outside my house (sunset here now) and my parrots were letting off some last minute squaks before dark, sounded like my property was full of wild parrots. Do any of you have wild parrots in your yard? if you do, lets here about them and see some pics!

Yeah we have them all over town down here.

If sighting and camera coincide I'll get a picture.

No parrots here, but the neighbor's peacock and hens wander through from time to time........

The cat isn't quite sure what to do about it.

Theres an area call Riverside in Rhode Island that has a HUGE wild parrot population.  They are actually considered pests and their nests are BIG!!!

It about a 20 minute drive... they are about 12" tall and build nests that can weigh up to 500lbs

Had an escapee once.  But it wasn't a parrot.  It was either a canary or parakeet.  I know there's a difference, but I don't remember.  It was 20 years ago.  I was out in the driveway working on a bike(notice how I've kept a motorcycle theme?), and he kept buzzing me.  Sort of like "this 'out in the wild' thing is scary-help me", but wouldn't make it easy to get him.  But he wouldn't go away either.  I finally got him with a large towel.  I gave him to the woman that watched our kids.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

We had Monk Parakeets hanging around our yard for a while, they'd nested in the high-tension power lines behind our house.  Unfortunately the utility guys came by a year or so ago and removed the nests, so they've not been around lately.  My wife has some pics somewhere, I'll see if I can find some.

Many years ago, there was a fire in Pasadena.
Was heading towards the zoo. Some kind soul let all the birds out of the aviaries.
There is now a pretty large flock of wild, tropical birds that live in the hills around Pasadena.
When I live there, every once in a while, the flock would move close in, and it sounded crazy.
Pretty cool stuff.
No.

We've got a substantial parrot population here in Amsterdam. How they survive the winters here is beyond me.
They live in groups, and fly from park to park.  ::)

I'm not an expert, but they could be ringnecks. They do have a thin coloured ring around their neck. The rest of their feathers is mostly green, and they have long tails. They also make a lot of noise. especially when they fly around.
I read in the paper that there are about a thousand of them, and they breed in our largest park right in the city center. They fly around to all other parks in town in groups.
