thoughts on oil filter adapter plates
« on: June 26, 2008, 03:45:12 AM »
I just changed my oil again, and replaced the filter with a new after market bolt(due to problems with old bolt, and the new aftermarket bolt has a larger head, 17mm as apposed to 12), but am considering the adapter for the automotive type screw on filter, but in the bolt there is a spring and a plunger, what purpose does this serve, and does this go away with the screw on adapter? I read the post about some of these adapters being made out of aluminum, and the threads messing up, and Terry in Australia, makes some that look like they have a brass threaded nut to hold them to engine(the center is the color of brass) i would guess this is better for threads, and is there any downsides to doing this, I commute daily on my bike and am weary of messing up my transportation! thanks for a great site SOHC-4

The only three issues that I can see with this mod are:
#1.) You will now have two seals to deal with instead of 1
#2.) You loose the cooling fins on the stock oil filter housing (one can argue over the effectiveness of those anyway).
#3.) Your ease of filter changes will change.  ;)

The spring holds the filter in place in the stock housing, I don't think you need one with the spin ons.
I have an oil cooler set up for my 78 engine. The adapter is aluminum. It is held on by a steel bolt. Might be the same with the spin on adapters.

The valve inside the stock filter bolt is a bypass valve.   If the filter element becomes clogged, the valve opens to allow the motor to continue receiving oil.  I've read that automotive oil filters have these built-in.

mystic_1 is right. Automotives have the bypass valve build-in.
I use the filters from the VFR750 for some years now, both commuting and on closed circuit racing, no problemo.
Like Terry from Oz, I make my one.

Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.
