Idea for "improving" the charging system...

My '83 CB650SC has a nasty habit of killing batteries because they lose charge fast, and then are fed charge fast. I'm thinking of buying a sealed battery...

While I was poking around, I was looking at the constant current trickle chargers, and wondered if anyone has considered putting a constant-current trickle charger on their bike, so that rather than the rectifier supply feeding straight into the battery, feed it into the trickle-charger first. That way the battery will not experience such wild charging current changes. Since a lot of electrochemical damage will occur as a result of very high transient currents, I think this might actually help a lot. I know that there would be more involved, probably some kind of diode bypasses to quasi-isolate the battery.

What do you think?

Sounds like you might have a regulator problem. While the earlier Hondas had just enough alternator current to run the bike with the headlight on and charge the battery, your 83 shouldn't have that problem.  But it should never cook a battery.  The regulators job is to get the battery to a charged state, and then stop charging.  Sounds like your's isn't stopping.

Most trickle chargers are less than an amp of current.

Don't think thats gonna be enough....


Also...its exactly the batterys job to absorb the high transient current requirements.
