How bad is this? (Pictured)
« on: September 23, 2008, 04:41:43 PM »

So that is oil on those fins. I'm three weeks away from a big trip (to the tune of 5,000 miles), and now I'm thinking I may have to rethink my plans. What do you all think?

thanks.

if it's not gushing out I wouldn't worry about it. to keep oil off your leg push some absorbent paper in there.
keep a check on your oil level

I've been driving mine like that for a few thousand miles, but no trips of that magnitude.

Degrease the area and see how fast she leaks if it's slow i wouldn't worry about it but remember to check your oil all the time on the trip also you can put a section of nylon rope in there to keep it off your legs.

Yeah its fine. Ive rode similar trips with a leak like that - just keep checking your oil level and you`ll be fine. I once did 1000 miles on 3 cylinders - these are tough engines. Have a good ride!

cheers

As long as that leak did not appear over night or a day or two, I would consider it good to go.

That's not a leak for a SOHC, that's only a minor seep. Have a fun ride!

Old Hondas don't leak oil - they're just marking their territory!!!    ;D

My CB500 gets a bit o' oil on the fins and has been like that since I have owned it. I just figured they were like old VW's and always dripping a bit of oil from somewhere? (or maybe its just an air-cooled engine thang?)

Hasn't gotten any worse in several thousand miles, so no worries. .  . . (for now   ;)

I've found that not cleaning it helps slow down the leaking some.  Every time I cleaned mine it seemed that it slung more oil until it got built up again.  So I just stopped cleaning the engine.  Amazing what a good layer of crud will do. ;D

I ride with toilet tissue in between those fins since I bought my bike. The seepage is so small that I don't have to refill oil between service intervals.

I like the nylon rope between the fins by the offending gasket.  Works like a charm and you can not see the rope since the fins in that area extend out a bit.  Keeps the motor nice and clean too.

Hey....Gunk (engine cleaner) is waaaaaaaay cheaper than fixing the leaking o-rings. Mine never seems to get worse. Drive on.
