How is DusterDude, or was it DustHawk ?? getting on?
« on: July 01, 2008, 03:15:51 AM »
Some of you will remember he had fallen on hard times and then some of you kind hearted guys salvaged his bike. He had a name for it which I can't remember. Then some of us donated some money to his paypal account because he was really down on his luck. Does anyone remember that?  Where is he now?

I usually check in with Jeff (dusthawk) now and then, but haven't managed it in a while. I have meant to for about a month or 2. Last I remember, he was healing up fairly well though. It makes me a bit edgy though because of the fact that he hasn't been seen or heard from in a while, because if he is able, he usually checks in. :(  I'll try to give him a holler, when I get back from taking care of some things. Maybe he's just been busy. Hopefully. ;)

Thanks Bill, yes he was Dusthawk and the bike was Rita...He had medical and mechanical problems, so I hope he is ok. This forum is a community and although you are in the USA and I'm in the South Pacific, I still think we need to look out for each other. Right?

Jeff, are you there "old son?"

Has it really been that long? Holy Moly, LMAO.

First, I would like to thank Glenn for Emailing me to remind me that you guys are all still here.

Boy, do I have a lot to catch you guys and gals up on.

First of all, the good news, my ankle and knee are finally healing up quite well, I can walk on the ankle fairly well with only a stirrup brace for support and the knee only give a hitch after it's been sitting in one position for too long. every once in a while my ankle will ache with the weather but I always expected that to happen with the two bolts still in there. I haven't had a recurrence of any traveling blood clots, so no more close brushes with death, lol.

And for the not so good news, my insurance company has repeatedly refused to authorize surgery for my shoulders and have finally scheduled yet another re-evaluation by a third Orthopedic Surgeon. The bad part is I have to wait yet again until September 5th to get here. I think the waiting is one of the worst parts of all this. AIG is trying to play the waiting game trying to get me just frustrated enough to give up completely and take the paltry settlement they want to offer me. I had to go out and hire a Workman's Comp Attorney to keep them from rolling right over me.

My shoulders are still almost completely useless to me, I can barely lift a gallon of milk, let alone do any kind of useful work. Both Orthopedic surgeons I have dealt with have told AIG that I need arthroscopic surgery to fix the problems but all to no avail. I am still confined to my electric wheelchair most of the time. I have gained about 100 pounds because my body won't allow any kind of exertion. My back goes out if I try walking more than 20 or 30 yards and I collapse, even if I stand for more than a few minutes at a time my back complains mightily. If I can start doing even light exercising I might be able to lose some of the weight but for now the most I can do is sit on my couch and watch T.V. or browse the internet when I have connection.

Rita, my dearest Rita, lolol. Well, she is here safe with me, on my front porch, covered by a tarp to protect her from the elements. She is waiting patiently for me to finish her, I only have a few more things to do to get her roadworthy again. I need to buy her new front end, bore the cylinders, and paint all the sheet metal. I have everything else I need now. I've been putting off buying the last of what I need trying to stay ahead of my bills while paying off all my old debts. Now that I live out here in the boonies I have been able to keep my head above water most of the time. I had hoped to be able to finish her by June this year but my shoulders can't do what I need them to do to work on her, so I have just been keeping her on the back burner till my shoulders are fixed. It is just a matter of waiting out the insurance company until they finally agree to pay for the required surgery. If they don't, my doctor will be forced to classify me as permanently totally disabled for the rest of my life, and I just couldn't live with myself if I didn't do everything in my power to keep that from happening.

Another of my problems is dealing with the depression I succumb to more often than not. There are days where I just want to stay in bed all the time and never come out of the trailer again. This has been happening more and more often the last several months but I just remind myself that it'll be over one of these days and I'll be able to work and ride again. It might not happen this year, or maybe not even next year, but it'll happen. I have to keep that faith or it just isn't worth keeping going. All of you who know me also know that I am not the type to give in so easily, but this has been going on for over 2 years now, and I have been in constant pain in my shoulders for almost 18 months. I am immune to pain killers so I don't even bother to have them prescribed anymore. A few months ago my Doctor gave me a month of Oxyconton but they only worked for 2 days before my body rejected them. I'm told they are supposed to be one of the most potent painkillers out there but they do nothing for me any more. I am talking to my attorney about a pain and suffering stipulation to the settlement we will be putting forth to AIG once they finally approve the shoulder surgeries. We have them by the proverbial balls because they paid an orthopedic doctor to write up an evaluation without ever having seeing me and only reading the materials AIG provided, so naturally they got a recommendation that they wanted, not what was actually true. I also want to go for a settlement that includes reparations for the il-legal means AIG obtained the report they wanted. My Attorney held that report like it was made of gold, lolol.

Anyway, I have to go for now, I promise to make it back here more often to chat and hang out. The last few days I've been without internet, they were upgrading the equipment but they are still working out bugs in the system.

Talk to you guys more soon,

Peace and Long Rides,

Jeff

Hey Jeff, Good to know that you are still hanging in there buddy. I know you are longing for the day when you and Rita can go for one of those nice carefree rides, and rightfully so. ;) I sent you an email myself, but I guess it hasn't caught up with you, or something.

Hey Jeff, glad to hear you are still around with us!!! You know one of the best way to fight depression is to hang with friends...if you can't visit all your friends in person there is always us here on the forum! I'm with My78k,

For what it's worth I know a little bit about depression, clinical and otherwise, as it's surfaced among my family more than once. Just when things seem too much to bear you have to (and can) dig just a little deeper.

I have a neighbor who battled a nearly crippling disability and ins. companies, etc... she didn't give up even though it often seemed it would never end. But it did, and she won her battle.

Don't let the bastards beat you. The fight is always worth the effort.

Seems like I saw on 60 Miniutes how AIG is one of the WORST at this bullsyte.  Write your congressman.  I'm not kidding.  Get mad.  Get out of the house.  Do what you can.  Some kind of exercise will help your circulation AND your head.  When you get down, conciously put a stop to the negative tapes you're replayinging in your head.

You can change your body with your mind.  I know this from experience.  It's the reason I still have a foot.  hell- why I'm here at all.  I seriously don't get why- but I'm still here and bugging a lot of people who need it.  I'm here to testify.

Call a TV station and go pass out on AIG's front steps.  Whatever it takes.  Call 60 Minutes, the BBB, your congressman, Red Cross, George Bush, and bang a pot with a wooden spoon.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Many years ago, while visiting an old business acquaintance, I couldn't hep but notice a little plaque displayed on his desk which read "Non Illigitmus Carborundum". Having studied a little high school Latin (and not being very proficient at it) I didn't quite understand it, so I had to ask.
Of course it is probably grammatically incorrect  and a rough translation but regardless it is still probably good advice  ......

So, Jeff,

"Don't Let The BASTARDS Grind You Down"

Good Luck and as Ernie said make lots of noise, companies which are not operating ethically do not like bad press. If they are treating you unfairly (which certainly appears to be the case .....) give 'em HELL!!!

You know what? Thats a damn good idea, we have a station out here that has one of those problem solvers, "Call Curtis". I think I'll do just that. The first year I was dealing with AIG they seemed like they truly wanted to help and get me fixed, but this last year they seem to be doing nothing but putting up roadblock. I'll even get my attorney into the whole drama, I'm sure he can put one hell of a "poor guy, trying to just get better to go back to work" spin to it that'll go great on T.V. This is gonna be fun.

I have had a couple run ins with the insurance companies  for smaller isssues. I can give you one bit of advice if you have not done it yet. contact your state insurance commission and explain to them what is going on. I would also inform AIG that you are filling a complaint with the state insurance comm. You would be surprised what a letter can do. like ernie said write your congressman. I would write one letter and put a cc to the state, your congressman, and AIG. that way the insurance co. knows all the people you are sending it to.

Hi Jeff, good to hear from you again, good to know you're still hanging in there.
Back in 94 I was driving to a job. I pulled up at a red light and while waiting I sneezed and ripped my back apart.
I was written off by the surgen and told I would never be able to work again.
I did go through 6.5 years of not working then the government pushed me back into work, they said there must be some menial job that you can do. I've been working and Racing again for 9 years now because I was pushed.
I wasn't to pleased about it in the first place but it has worked out just fine.
Stick in there Jeff and don't let it get you down, good luck mate.

Oh, God, I hope like hell it won't be 6 years, I would definitely go nut if I couldn't work for that long. It's only been 25 months and I can barely sit still. I can't go another four, they'd have to put me in a straight jacket and put me in a padded room for sure.

Hi Dusty
I haven't been in here for months - busy with my new job teaching kids with disabilities at a special school. Its very challenging but I love it.
I've been wondering how you are getting on. It was good to find this thread, even though it is a couple of months old.
I hope you are able to sort out your insurance, especially with the news we are hearing of the AIG collapse. Don't give up.

Well, it finally happened, I got the approval for the shoulder arthroscopy. After the re-evaluation got mailed to my attorney and AIG, my attorney sent a follow up letter to AIG and demanded in no uncertain terms that they are left with a single option, approve the surgery or be faced with major litigation. The doctor who did the re-evaluation was very blunt in his report stating that he is disappointed that AIG would waste his valuable time by asking him to conduct an identical exam as the one he performed the year before, especially considering that no treatments had been done as per his recommendations of the earlier exam.

Ten days following the re-evaluation, the state set up an appointment as well and forwarded the results of that exam to my attorney and to AIG. I think AIG may have had their collective faces rubbed in their own folly enough that they finally got off their asses and approved the shoulder work.

On the other side of this happy coin is some bad news. In August I was able to get my hands on a back brace to help myself start walking around more and burning up some of the calories. With the support the brace gave me, I was finally able to set my cane aside and walk upright for the first time in over 2 years. The bad comes in when I discovered that there is a clicking in my ankle when I walk. It only happens when my weight is all on that leg and I am using that leg to propel myself forward. Dr. Teasdale examined it, then took a couple X-rays, but couldn't see anything. We have to ask approval for another surgery to remove some bolts used to hold my tibia together and get another series of MRI scans to see whats going on. He thinks that too much scar tissue grew in the ligaments and tendons holding the Fibula in place and it is shifting and rubbing the tibia wrong. If that is the case, I'll need yet another surgery to clean up the scar tissues and to install bolts again to hold the Fibula and Tibia together again. Those bolts will be permanently mounted in the bones to keep them in place. Once they are there, I'll lose the ability to rotate my foot more than a few degrees. Which could be bad news for my riding days. I am not sure but from what my doctor said it will be more difficult for me to shift my foot on and off the foot brake, so either I have to shave the brake lever to fit the amount of movement my foot will be able to do, or keep moving my foot side to side on the peg when I need to brake. It'll be a bit more work to ride but it'll take a lot more than this to keep me from riding again.

Rita is still sitting here, waiting for me to get to her. I'll be taking the jugs to a machine shop soon to have it bored out. Either that, I'll buy a new set of jugs from Cycle Exchange, depending on the price difference. I like the idea of going with the Cycle Exchange jugs because they bore them all the time, where-as a machine shop may only bore these out once ever couple of years, might be worth it regardless. I now have the paint and primer I need for the sheet metal, so that leaves getting the new front end, but that will have to wait until I get my settlement from AIG.

More to come soon,

Peace and long rides,

Jeff

Still around, lol. Not doing as well as I was back in September. We've had several reschedules and it finally looks like my shoulder work will be done on Friday. Last appointment with my doctor I finally told him I give up and told him to do whatever he thinks best, I can't find it in me to care much longer. It's been almost 2 and a half years and I am barely better than I was before I got hurt. The back brace I got a few months ago has been a great help, I can now walk over a mile. While it still hurts my back a lot, I think my back is slowly getting better and stronger. I've even started losing some weight. I was pushing 400 pounds when I got it but I'm now down below 360. I lucked out a few weeks ago and found a recumbent exercise bike and use it almost daily.

The biggest news I have decided to quit smoking. My start date was three days ago but it is a lot more difficult than I ever thought it would be. I've already caved in several times, but I hope to find enough inner strength to keep at it. I'm not very strong right now dealing with the depression but I try every day to keep strong and not smoke. I'll try to remember to drop in more often to say howdy.

Dusthawk have you thought about running a rear hand brake. I have a couple buddies that stunt their bikes (buells) that use them and actually got to the point where they run them on all there bikes, stunt or not.

I dont know about cigs since I dont smoke (taste like #$%*) but im addicted to 7up.. I just live w/ it and pay the dentist bills each year. Not a lot of help there.. :D

On the excercise sistuation I strongly suggest you get a decent rowing machine if you can find a way to afford it. I assure you if you rock two 20 min sessions a day (obviously build up to it) on a rowing machine like a "Concept 2" you will be in decent shape in no time. Personally I have found a good audio book and a rowing machine to be the best workout. A great side benefit to exercise is that it helps w/ depression.. Truste me this comes from a guy that has had 17 suicides on my moms moms side w/ my uncle being the last and my sister is severe bi-polar.

Good luck!

Cafe', a rowing machine is way out of my league right now. My back can barely handle 10 minute sessions on the recumbent, and that's with the back brace on. My shoulders would also never stand up to the strain of a rowing machine. I can walk okay but need to carry my cane because after a quarter mile my back starts having pains. I can walk the entire distance to downtown Bethel Island which is a bit over a mile and a half, but I have to stop several times to sit during the walk. It usually takes me about an hour to an hour and ten minutes to get there.

As far as the smoking goes, I have been smoking for almost 30 years and am really feeling it lately. In addition, as of last July, due to California Workman's Comp laws, I have been classified as permanently disabled. What this means is a major reduction of benefits which has severely curtailed my quest to finish off Rita. I still need a new front end and the jugs still need to be bored out to fit the 836 pistons Terry in Australia blessed me with last Christmas. I'll eventually be able to get what I need but for at least the next 6 months she will have to remain parked on my deck under the tarp. All of my parts are still in the cabinet and tub waiting to be mounted and installed. I was able to purchase a ton of wiring so when I am ready to finish her I can rewire everything to brand new.

This Friday I'll be going in for shoulder surgery and I already have an exercise band to start therapy once my Dr. say I can go ahead and do it.

Anyway, time to crash. Be back soon.

Hey DustHawk, keep up the good work.  You're gonna find that weight loss and core muscle work will help your back a LOT.  take a look at isometrics as a way to help strengthen muscles without overloading your joints.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_exercise
http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/common/standard/transform.jsp?requestURI=/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/exercise.jsp

post shoulder arthroscopy:
http://physicaltherapy.about.com/od/strengtheningexercises/ss/shoulderarthros_3.htm

walking is a great thing, keep working on that as well.  Tendons and ligaments don't have direct blood flow, so they heal a lot slower than muscle, but if you keep gently working them and letting them rest after, you will see a big difference.
About your recumbent- Are you working with a physical therapist?  Is this a real bike or kind of a cycle machine at home?  something about ankle/joint healing to consider, too, is constant passive motion (google that, too)  it's been shown very useful in healing joint injuries because the same fluids that help heal cartilage and ligaments are pumped through with joint motion.  Constant passive motion is very, very gentle, slow movement that goes on for a long time, so it doesn't tire you out or wear out the joint, per se, but keeps stuff moving to heal things faster (and helps the joint resurface the rough healing cartilage optimally)
here's a link that has more to do with research on knee replacement, but it's still the same concept, relative to pain meds not working:
http://www.fahc.org/Rehab_Therapies/Evidence/quality01_dtl_1_12400_19345.html

One step at a time, one day at a time.
(I'm not a doctor, I just kinda work around some of this stuff a bit and want to offer some encouragement if I may)

Edit: I changed a couple of the links, because one of them was just commercial crap that I mistook for a really great iso site I can't find anymore...  also added one that is for post-arthroscopy patients, but you might want to ask your doctor if strengthening those muscles might help you now, too.

Isometrics for your core can be as easy as just holding your abs and back firm to support your back while you do stuff (your recumbent, walking, etc)  and that firms up the muscles that way.

Hey Dusthawk,

I recently tore up my shoulder pretty good. A section of my clavicle broke off, turned 90 degrees, and reattached itself that way, and my scapula broke in 3 places, one of the fractures going through the shoulder joint. That section moved down half an inch and healed up. SO I don't really have a joint anymore. All tendons and ligaments were torn or disconnected. Not as serious as yours, but bad enough.

Anyway, my point is, that the rehab guys have been working the hell out of the muscles in my rotater cuff, and already it's way better. My arm was just falling out of it's joint 3 and 4 weeks ago. With all the work im doing on strengthening the muscles, I havent been wearing the brace or taping it up, and it hasnt been falling out, even when doing curls.

Check out those isometric excercises that kitsune linked to you. I do some of those, plus another set of excercises that actually dont allow movement of the joint, but build up the muscles that are needed to hold my arm in.

Just keep working at it, stuff will improve if you stick to it. My own improvement makes me believe anyone can improve this stuff with hard work.

Good luck man, and I'll be checking the threads to see how you are doing.
