Engine Stands?
« on: June 30, 2008, 10:26:07 PM »
I've been searching around the internet for an engine stand to hold my motor(CB750) while I am rebuilding it, however I haven't been able to find much.  The few stands I've found are between $200-$600.  While I don't usually have issues spending money on good tools, I seem to recall a few years ago when I helped a friend pull a chevy 350 small block out of his camaro he bought a brand new engine stand for around $80.  I can't imagine that an $80 dollar stand can hold a car motor, and I can't find a stand in the same price range to hold a 200 pound motorcycle engine?!?!  I've also checked ebay and craigslist and haven't found anything either.

Could someone please shed some light on this mystery for me, or possibly know where I could get a reasonably priced stand?

Or would I just be better off setting the motor directly on a work bench and not bothering with the stand?

Get in touch with Bunghole. He's doing a rebuild with pics of his bike and garage. I think the thread is "Total Rebuild" or something. I asked him about the stand he said he got it from Harbor Freight. But I reckon he can give you more specifics

One of the best tool investments I've ever made is this stand from K&L.
It isn't inexpensive but VERY well designed and constructed.
Z1 Enterprises probably has the best price.

Someone has recently posted a picture of one of these adapted to hold a CB750 engine.   http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=engine+stand.
The price seems right.
Cheers,
Cliff.

I just built one from wood from pictures someone had put up.  I actually made this same thread, do a search and you should find quite a few pictures and sources.

Tim (kghost) beat me to it. ::) That's a nice job there Tim. 8) The one I was going to post, is from 650motorcycles.com and is basically the same, except not as well made perhaps.

KGhost, I think I might just take your route and build an adapter for a regular car engine stand.

I don't suppose you still have the dimensions for that holder you built?  I can measure it out myself but if you had them handy that would great.

I don't remember taking any.....its box tubing cut to fit.

Think the only thing I measured was the OD of the headpipe that goes into the stand.

I have about $60 in this setup...
Harbour Freight engine stand (china junk but very functional) SKU#S32916  (was $39.00)
4 UNISTRUT Angles :>>>   http://www.unistrut.com/Browse/cat_detail.php?S=S05&P=P1359
Misc nuts bolts washers from hardware store...

I can spin it 360.. and pin it every 1/8th turn.

Chippy Five

That's exactly what I was looking for.  I picked up an engine stand tonight at a local auto store for $60, and I was debating welding together something to hold it, but those unistrut fittings look perfect.  I'll have to check the local hardware store and see if I can find some.

Thanks for all the pics and ideas everyone

You may have to search for a UNISTRUT location in your area to get them, they are ROBUST..
