Oh spark plug, what have I done?
« on: August 30, 2005, 02:54:08 PM »
I bought a new set of deep metric sockets and I am having trouble getting at the number 2 plug on my 750 k2.  I either cannot reach it with my deep socket or

I have stripped it.  Any suggestions (I have already tried beer and rum) ;D

PUT IT ON THE PLUG WITHOUT THE RATCHET AND LOOK INTO THE SQUARE HOLE AND SEE HOW FAR THE PLUG GOES UP THE SOCKET  ;D

This is why honda gave you a special tool to remove spark plugs with in your tool kit. Chances are socket is not seating on the plug or you wouldn't be able to get the rachet on the socket. if you striped it you should be able to hand tighten it and feel the thing jump the thread.

Standard deep well sockets have straight external sides.  Bits of the motor block straight access onto the spark plug and don't allow a standard socket to fit onto the spark plug.
The Honda tool kit socket is bell shaped where it goes over the body of the plug and narrower above it to avoid interference with the motor bits.

Either get a stock type socket or one that emulates it's bell shape.

A deep well socket will work, provided it is a thin walled socket also. Perhaps the one you are using is not thin walled.. enough. I have use one with a short U-joint. Break it loose and unscrew by hand. Installing, also by hand until it is seated, then put the wrench on the end of the U-joint.

My socket must be to thick walled to engage the plug.  Judging from the advice, I must not have stripped it.  I will search for a thin walled socket.  Does anyone have any info on manufacturers of these or the Honda version.  You have all been a huge help in both this post and all that I have read.  THANKS.

I had the same problem with my 550. I had a deep socket but it just wouldn't fit the plug right because the socket couldn't go into the well straight. I found another deep socket (but shorter than the first one) and with a u-joint it worked like a charm.

The one I use is labeled "Great Neck," some sort of Tiawanese tool, but probably 25+ years old. Probably the only socket I always know where I put it last.  ;)

They also have them at https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index2.php?category=tools

They are $2.00, but PartsNmore has a minimum order of $35.00. If you were already planning on ordering stuff, you'd be all set.

I have used a Craftsman 18mm deep with  a stubby 1/4" ratchet,a 4", 1/4" extension and a 3/8" adaptor on the u joint. The 1/4" extension allows for more clearance. The Crafsman is thinner walled than either the regular  MAC or Snap-On deeps. If I have the engine apart I always open up the area by grinding the valve cover and some of the head bolt bosses around 2 & 3- worksd out very well

Yeah I use a craftsman 18mm deep well with no problems. I also use a 3 in extension 1/2 size.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the stock plug socket tool also has a handy rubber insert that holds the loose spark plug in the socket for insertion and retraction.

Rather handy.
