Engine out, Stripping paint?
« on: July 01, 2008, 10:34:03 PM »
I have a 78' 750F motor with 6,000 miles...I want to strip the black,  and do not want to disassemble the engine. Any recommendations?  Looking to polish covers, and fins, spray the block silver and the head black.  Thanks!

P.S. is the aerosal aircraft stripper alright? or will it eat the gaskets even with the engine assembled?

Sandblast it, just make sure to use other type of media instead of sand.

A good stripper that will not eat rubber or gaskets but really eats paint is Brake Fluid. Get the cheap $1 Store stuff.

Yes aircraft remover works just fine, I've used it quite a bit. Also get ya a 3/4 inch ( or smaller ) crimped end brush ( fine bristles ), stick it in the end of your drill and go to town on the nooks and crannies..

Practice saftey precautions.. i.e. safety glasses and what not, this stuff is brutal on the skin. I would hate to know what it feels like in your eyes..

Actually using it right now on another engine.. Let is soak, and let it do the work.. Paint just peels right off...

good luck

tooth brush, and that crimped in fine bristle brush, and patience.. Again that aircraft remover will do the work for you, so let it set for a few minutes..

Once you got it all off, sand with fine grit, and paint..

It's doesn't take weeks.. Mine was really bad off, and it took me about 3 hours..

Spray or brush on the stripper and then wrap the cylinders with foil so the stuff doesn't dry off, then leave it for an hour or so. Next use a high pressure washer - that should blast off the paint/stripper goo completely. Be careful where you spray with the pressure washer. Do this somewhere you don't mind making a big mess (like at a car wash booth!) and wear clothes you can throw out plus full eye googles like swim goggles. Be gentle where the gaskets are and stay away from the main case shaft seals.
