Close call on the Hot Rod
« on: July 02, 2008, 07:26:41 PM »
I had a VW Bettle run a red light on me this evening.  I was going about 25 through an intersection and saw this girl coming from the right.  I would have hit her in the drivers door, but I locked up the rear wheel, did a big wiggle, and came about a foot from her door.  She then stopped in the middle of the intersection!  I was almost creamed by the car in back of me.  It was almost UGLY. :o  I feel like a cat with nine lives right now.  If I was going the speed limit - 35MPH, I might not be posting this from home.  Damn that was too close for me to feel good about.

sparty, too bad you had to have a "close encounter" like that, but glad that's all it was though. Hate to see "The Hot Rod" messed up, but (at least) it could be fixed back up. ;) Whereas, you might not have been so lucky. You take care now. :)

Wonder what it would be like to have you and Sam lined up on a drag strip against each other. ;) Bet THAT would be a race to see. ;)

I screw around on bikes.. way to much..
and I ride like an idiot..way too often..

Which is part of why I stayed off the street so long..

Now I dont mind going for a nice long ride, but dont get that oportunity as often as I like..(but I already did that)

Add to that several fairly serious injuries, with long recoveries, and ongoing issues. So i am not anxious to go back there..

I spent a year in plaster for one (plenty of plaster on other tiomes), I have a list of broken bones, so sometimes I dont miss it so much..

A guy at work totalled his Busa 2 weeks ago, experinced good rider, not his fault... and he got pretty lucky..

Yesterday an 18 yr old Sporbike rider took his last one..

today, 3 or 4 or more bikes went down before noon..

its nasty out there.. watch out..

and if you hop up your 4, make the whoa...... match the go..

I've been sticking to lesser used back roads as much as possible.  Big vehicles filling up my mirror make me nervous.  Even those Beetles feel large when they're right up behind me.   :-\

Sparty, glad you're OK. (except for your drawers anyway)

I do most of my miles on the open road where there are far fewer cars and trucks (ie idiots). Seems that most of the time I'm headed somewhere in town I need the car for packing stuff around anyway. For all you guys that haven't done any touring, you just don't know what you are missing.

Stay safe. Remember to ride like every car you see is out to get you and your odds will greatly improve.

Glad to hear everything turned out alright sparty. Seems theres a lot of idiot cagers out there nowadays....

My bike hasnt turned a wheel since near the begining of june...Mostly because i found out that i need to a fair bit of work to upgrade the performance of the braking system. I still remember the feeling of my heart up in my throat when i grabbed the front brake during the poker run and realised the bike wasnt even close to slowing down as fast as i would like...

Glad you are ok Art and close call! I bet it was a heart-thumping moment.

I get these on a daily basis riding the very short distance to work (4 miles each way) in busy traffic. Cars stopping suddenly in front of me has been the latest favourite. Thank goodness I have stainless steel lines up front - what a difference! I was 10` from someones rear bumper the other morning braking suddenly from 25-30mph. Giood brakes are invaluable.

Take care out there  ;)

cheers
Andy

What I want to know is how you were able to maintain 25mph on that beast ;)  Glad to hear that you keep your eyes on EVERYTHING, Art. It's the only way we get to keep riding. They really ARE out to get us, I think :P

I was at an intersection recently taking a protected left while the adjacent lane was waiting for the light to turn green. One of the waiting cars saw the car I was following into the intersection but failed to see me and whipped in behind it to take the turn. No turn signal, no glance in the mirror or turn of the head, no turning of the front wheels before accelerating into my lane, no warning whatsoever. I swear that cars bumper passed through my bike, don't know how it didn't hit me.

I've done a lot of brake squealing, emergency maneuvers and fist shaking before and after and awareness of the surroundings has alerted me to the dangers before they happen. This past incident reinforced, for me, the need to wear proper gear even when I'm not planning on riding hard.

Keep those eyes peeled, Sparty. Doin' great :)

25MPH isn't easy.  I was more or less just coasting.  Rain today, so no riding for me.
