clutch rattle
« on: November 25, 2008, 11:23:38 AM »
When I start my 1978 CB750K when it's cold the clutch sounds like a tin can full of pebbles. Starts , runs, fine. After she warms up a bit she quiets down a little. Is this normal?
Thanks

There could be a few different causes for clutch chatter.  What viscosity oil are you running? Sometimes in the cold if the oil is to thick the plates can stick and chatter and what not.  Or just check the condition of your clutch for burnt, glazed, or warped friction plates.

Some amount of clutch rattle is unavoidable on the SOHC4.  Assuming your 78's clutch is stock, it already has the updated clutch that is a bit less prone to rattle.  A smooth running engine will rattle clutch plates less; in particular, synchronizing the carbs will help.  Still going to sound like a bucket of marbles tho, particularly when the engine is cold and not running smoothly . . . .
