Still prefer drive shafts
« on: July 13, 2008, 03:12:26 PM »
because after all these years, I still know doodly* about chains.
So, my 400 adjuster bolts have only about 1/4 inch of space left to let out, but the right bolt head is rubbing the stock muffler. Do I;
1) Just put shorter bolts in there, or
2) Time to replace the chain.
3)?

Also- does an O-ring chain fit in there without mucking up the cases?

The O-ring chain should be OK on the cases, there's a lot of space. If you have aftermarket shocks with extended springs the chain will probably hit the shock spring or preload adjuster, Mulhollands interfere and they're pretty typical extended spring shocks. The stock shocks have the damper only from just above the chain guard right down to the clevis and have lots of room..

Option number 2.  But, don't be down on yourself.  I'm sure diddly is the right description of your intelligence.  Like, I'm sure I don't have to tell you to change the sprockets at the same time, or else the old ones will eat up a new chain.

I'm also sure that this info is the difference between diddly and doodly.  It is interesting that spell check knows diddly, but
Doesn't know doodly!

2) Time to replace the chain.

...AND SPROCKETS!  ;)

If it's adjusted out that far they're both pooched*.

Try pulling the chain off the rear sprocket, between 12 and 6 oclock. back half..

and see how much it lifts & compare to new chain, that will tell the story on chain, regardless of speockets..

Sorry, but during the back half of 12 to 6, I'm fast asleep.  I hope that will work during the day...

Well, I was hoping I could put a shorter bolt in there as the chain and rear sprocket looks pretty fair.  Looks like I wasted some chain wax.
Thanks all.
