OIL
« on: July 06, 2008, 12:34:12 PM »
I've been looking AND SEARCHING the archives about oil... the main consensus seems to be that EVERYONE SHOULD LOOK UP THEIR OWN SH!T because its already been hashed to pieces.

all of these types of comments distract from the topic, make the person saying them look like hitler, and simply do not answer the question asked.

if we could all just get off of our search button high horses, maybe we could actually hash something out.

i'm sorry, but i really hate reading "did you try the search function because this question was already answered" !

grow up and don't click on the thread if you're bored of the topic, and don't answer unless you have a useful answer.

cheers,
one pissed off X-moderator

If you hate reading that phrase so much then take your own advice and don't click on threads where you know people are likely to type it.

My 2 cents...I do not mind oil threads, tire threads, etc.  I always learn something from those who respond in a helpful way.  And I believe that is what this forum is all about...to help each other.  You guys are the best... ;D

Search? Search? whats that? Is that that little function which in most cases will find nothing? Unless you do not mind finding something NOT related to what you want to find? I agree with heffey. It makes a person look like an @$$, especially since the person usually asking is a new member. Sure makes the rest of us look good doesn't it. I guess some people are not concerned with gaining new members are they.

I agree with heff in one respect.  If all we did was point to old answers, we would never learn of new information, ideas or discoveries that some of us find.

Oil,
It's pretty powerful stuff.

I love a good oil thread.  And that includes learning something new.  I'll agree our searches bring up a lot of unrelated threads when you just put in "oil".  Type in "Synthethic vs" and you get some good info like this
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=36651.30
I look for posts from the guru members who really know these bikes (you know who U R!!)
Do the same on all the forums I'm on...

I don't really like watching noobs get their ass handed to them either, but it's usually taken w/ a grain of salt if the ppl have been introduced to public forums elsewhere.

Geez Heff, if you want to rant that's cool. But not about (20W-50 Synthetic) Oil (that is, Black Gold, Texas Tea). Anything BUT oil puleeeeezeee. If you need a fatherly figure to help just call  ;)

So will this lead us to more discussions about oil, searching, or ranting?

Let's turn this into a poll so we can just vote and not discuss  :o  ::)  :P

And Gordon, you ought to know better. Ha Ha Ha  Now, about the hashing out part.................

My main interests are.. long term tests of an oil type run religiously..

That said, I will try to pull my much abused one apart soon.. 25 yrs old motor, sat for years sometimes..  be interesting..

like what ofreen runs that is interesting..

once you use more than 1 brand it gets hard to guage how well it held up..

Has anyone run High Mileage in a bike? I know I know. Car oil. Put Kendall High Mileage in my 91 Acura Legend for the first time. It was going through a quart every 2500 miles after 17 years. Never has a leak! Probably due to thermostat and ensueing head gaskets. Overheated and probably hardened the valve seals. Now at 3000 miles it's used only 1/2 quart. I'm pleasantly surprised!!

Amen to that.  I'll be running 20W-50 until november if this heat continues.

I dunno, man.  I always look up anything I need to know exhaustively before posting questions.  But some things are like Jesus or beer opinions - always up for more debate and further spilled ink.  A forum by definition would seem to involve some redundancy.

I nominate Heffay to collect all the info from all the previous oil threads and boil it down into a new comprehensive thread we can put in the FAQ.

Who wants to do tires?

Nice one Void  ;)

Heffay - whats the point of having a search function if no one uses it?  ::)

And if you want to know what oil to use - ask Ofreen (Greg) - he has one of the highest mileage bikes on this Forum. Experience counts.

Contrary to the fashion I will support Heffay. I've been registered in mailing list, since I had a dial-up in internet. Yet, my post counter is very low. Why? Because after good search there are hardly any more questions to ask. I found it VERY educational to search this forum and read the topic.
And don't you criticize teh serach engine on this forum. I'm (and I think many of you are too) active in few other forums, and this search engine is THE BEST!

And yes, I run Rimula (that's european for Rotella) too, despite being looked upon like a wild monkey - we don't have such big differences in oil prices in Europe. They are ALL expensive anyway....
Welcome to my mountains!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...go to Google if you want to do a decent search in the forums. I've been using it to search since the Greenspun forums. It's the only way to fly. You just enter the site address to search specifically within a site. Hey Mods...or Glenn, perhaps we can add a link to Google advanced search somewhere?
