Is this guy crazy?
« on: July 06, 2008, 07:43:55 PM »
Is this guy crazy? No stock exhaust either. (exhaust on there actually looks like junk)

It's a chicago craigslist ad. This almost makes me want to post on top of him and ask $2.5k, since mine looks better then his and see what happens. Although I think I would make a a*s out of myself instead of sell the bike, maybe people actually pay that kind of money for running old CBs in chicago, since always sell non running?

Here's the ad.  :-X

I'd say that's a wee on the high side. I think he's of the old=$ school of thought.

You get that a lot around here in the Northeast. I saw a pair of 400Ts sinking into a yard near my parents house. Since I didn't have anything better to do I knocked on the door and asked what he might take for them. "Oh, those are old Hondas you know. They are rare, but I would take $1000 for both of them I guess." I told him I'd think about it and went back to doing nothing.

Some people are just out of touch is all.

Don't think I would buy a bike from a guy who can't spell "chrome" or "fender".......just saying.

@ fixahonda, thats how the guy was I bought mine from except it was ALOT nicer then a backyard bike that needs an overhaul. But he kept telling me how rare it was and how he could sell the carbs for what he was giving it to me for. I think they just like having them as conversation pieces and don't know how much they're worth? I could be wrong, I would say most people here would know better. But if you didn't I could see someone easily paying TOP dollar for these bikes, while most here look for something cheap or something cheap that needs some work.

Nothing ticks me off then people that hold their hand off because they have family member or friends that were in the military. I'm not non patriotic, I personally have close family and many friends in the marine but I don't give sap stories and then hold my hand out. Reminds me of a waiter that I used to work with that was well off and made 3 times the tips (literally 300 dollars a night at a family pizza pub) telling every single person she waited how she is a single mom and has a daughter in iraq, what she didn't mention is her daughter was back in America, she had a wealthy boyfriend, and made hundreds of dollars a night..... yeah kinda off topic. That 750 had nasty pipes and a very strange seat!
Some sellers just think old equals antique.....not!!!!
My bike cost $700 (about $400 US) and there is a guy on Trade-me asking $15000 for the same bike!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

What would have been a good price for that 1970 CB750? I'm hoping to pick up an early 750 for my next project.

The $45,000. must be a down payment on the house in the background and the bike is a bonus..?

The word we use on this side of the pond for people who make such outlandish offers is "chancers". they're everywhere. They're not always successful but when they are the money they make from the poor sap that actually buys the machine covers for all their unsuccessful attempts.
I wonder if the forum administrators should start a new section called "Crazy Offers for sale". It would be handy for less experienced buyers of sohc machines just to see what people think of the "rarity" they're about to buy.
Having said all that, having watched prices for 750 ks go up and up in the past couple of years since I bought mine, I can only think that we'll regard these kind of offers as a "bargain" in the not too distant future.

Strangedaze, you are so right! I couldn't believe what I was reading about that chick and her Harley. I guess on this side of the pond we call them con-artists but they act the same as "chancers".

I thought that CB was high priced when his opening bid was $1500, but what do I know? I paid $325 for my K3 which still has stock exhaust but I suppose the stuff is worth what the buyer is willing to pay. It makes it harder for us to find bargains but I guess we can take comfort in the fact that we can pawn the stuff on feebay for big bucks. Somehow, I'm not comforted. :'(

Something I've told people about IH Scouts, If you're buying it isn't worth anything, if you're selling it's worth as much as you can get.   In short, it's only worth what someone is willing to give for it.

There's a saying in auto sales that seems appropriate.  "There's an a$$ for every seat".  (No, the dollar signs were not an intended or unintended pun).  If someone waits long enough, there will be somebody who will pay her price.  Although, if you believe her story, she doesn't have much time.  But on the other hand, that might be part of the sales pitch.  She is a self admitted sales person.  And a good sales person will say just about anything to make the sale.  And they think long and hard about what that pitch will be.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

I think this guy got ripped off by his powder coater and is trying to pass his loss on. Nice seat and tank, but other than the coating and slapping on a new can is there really much "there" to justify what he's asking?

According to that thread the bike belongs to Tattoo Dave. No offense Dave and I do hope you get what the bike is worth to ya, just don't see much except cleaning up the look to your tastes. Definitely costs what you're asking in time and work and if the job were contracted I can see charging near that. :)

EDIT:  Park near the casino's with a for sale sign. Some lucky winner should oblige ya ;)

I like the look of the blue and orange bike, though my favorite car growing up was the Gulf Porsche, so that may have something to do with it.

On the opposite end of the price spectrum, I've had my trail 90 listed on craigslist for about a month now.  I got an email from some guy, and it had to be the most ridiculous one ever.  I'm asking $700 for a titled, running bike, and the guy emails me saying "How can you ask that much for the bike, they sold for less than that new!  I'll give you $350 for it."  I replied simply "HA", so I think he got the picture.  But jeez, what kind of reasoning is that?  I guess my '66 Bus is only worth $500 because it was like $2k new, right ::)

That depends, do you have the correct middle seat for that bus?  If so I'll give you $600 for the whole thing sight unseen  ;D

I've got a short middle seat frame in the basement.  But my bus is a non walk through, so it's not right for it.

Dusty,

Is it a middle seat from a splitty or from a fat chick?  If it is a splitty middle seat you need to get on www.thesamba.com and sell that bad boy.  If it is from a fat chick, you might still sell it, but it ain't worth much.
