ear spacers
« on: July 05, 2008, 05:50:59 PM »
I know the answer is somewhere on here but did a search and can't find it. I have installed tapererd stearing bearings in my KO and now the headlight ears have a gap from the top of the tube to the bottom of the bridge.

What kind of spacers have been used to are to fill this?

On top of each headlight ear there should be a rubber spacer. I ended up getting mine from a junk yard.

The Honda part number is 51601-300-000 and it was used on many different Honda models.

bucky is a lilac point siamese. rescued from the seminole county animal shelter the mornign he was to be euthanized. other than a few minor quirks (dont touch his hands, feet or belly or youll get bitten.........hard) he's a great cat. my other siamese (cross) had a purebred siamese mom and dad looked like sylvester from looney toons. and sorry for the post hijack. and yeah............i DO have a pretty big melon.

I was still able to get mine from the Honda dealer last winter.

While you can do as you inquire, you may want to know the root problem. I think you have either not seated the races all the way or have used the wrong spacer causing the gap in your fork ear. Your upper clamp is now further away from the lower one and this is an error.  This thread http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=36470.0  discusses the use of spacers.

If you have put the too thick washer under the lower race which you had to press on, you may not want to mess with fixing it and just shim out the ears instead.

The last post is right about the cause..

a real pita though if you run ears.. without, it is not an issue..

The one thing I should add is,

BEFORE you install the tapered, take a measurement of what is left up top, as soon as the upper tree is removed.. then use that as a reference.. before you instasll forks or ears.. :)

Sometimes even when the bearings are properly installed/spaced, the ears may still be a little off. The rubber spacer ring that sits atop both ears can be shimmed upward, filling the gap you speak of. Add a rubber o ring (or two) UNDER the factory spacer ring to slightly raise it. Only the rubber spacer will show, the o rings will be hidden below. I know that this works on the 550, you may give it a try for the 750 tho. Just a thought.
