turn signal wiring (new ones have 3 wires) dual filament
« on: September 01, 2005, 07:51:34 AM »
I just got these nice new aluminum turn signals off of ebay.  They are dual filament signals with 3 wires.  How should I go about mounting them since the stock only has 2 wires front and rear?  I figure for the rear I can not use one of the wires and just plug in the positive and negative but how about the front?  do I plug both the + filiament wires in the front and then ground the 3rd wire to the headlight mount wire (inside shell)

Thanks for the help.

chris, those are for front running lites too.if you dont want to use the running lite portion, just dont use the wire for that function.

You need to find out which wire is ground and connect that to a green in the headlamp shell or rear light wiring. Then you need to find out which wire is a bright light (blinker) and which is dim (running) Blinkers go into orange or blue running into same colour with white tracer. No running lights at rear , I dont think they are legal and whilst legality is up to you its an easy reason to get you pulled over

thanks guys, thats kinda what I was thinking.

i'm not too worried about the legality of blinkers.  I've NEVER heard of anyone getting pulled over for having too small of blinkers on the bike.  As long has they work and your not riding crazy most police leave you alone.  And besides its a 30 year old bike.  Most police wouldn't know what they were looking at anyway :)

chris,i dont know if you are using them on the front or rear, but you dont need them to be running lites anyway.

I'm using them on both front and rear.  I figure the running lights are basically a DOT safety parking issue.  As long has the headlight is blazing and your visible there's nothing a little running light can do for you.  Basically just need blinkers :)

Now I have to find a new place to put them.  Just got a Viper fairing and I dont think they'll be visable on the fork ears.  Tonights project :)

I got a set of 1'' wide chrome blinkers from work. Wired them in the rear , just below the seat. They function as running lights , brake lights , and turn signals, along with the cateye taillight on the side mount license plate frame. No turn signals in the front.

Looks like they are factory , and match the rear chrome fender quite well.

Wired up the rears today.  I had to do alittle drilling out of the stock threads on the rear fender and the rear frame whole where the grab rail attaches to get the new blinker posts to fit.  They look great and work nice too.  Bike looks funny without the grab rail but I'll get used to it.  I would have done the fronts but I have to install my cafe fairing first and figure out "where" to put them after that.  I would've just mounted them on the headlight bracket but now with the fairing that idea is toast.

It sounds like you installed the rears in the frame holes just to the rear of the upper shock mounts which seems to be a good location except that it limits the amount that the seat hinges. My bike didn't have a grab rail but I would have taken it off anyway. I've found the stock front lollipops to work well mounted to the fork-tube ears.

Actually the lights are small enough that my seat hinges /opens perfect and does not come close to the lights.

I should get some of those. Do you still want the fairing mount picture?

That would be great for that fairing mounting pic. Thanks

btw,  these are the turnsignals.  They're made by K&L.

Real Quick question.  With the dual filament fronts.  Should both filaments be on with the ignition (parking lights) and then goto to one light for the blinker.   parking (brighter)   blinker (dimmer)?

Thanks Again

The BRIGHTER setting should be used for your blinker/turn-signal in my opinion.
It really doesn't matter - 100% your decision.

Some people like to have the brighter setting as the running light , so they are more noticable in traffic and such.

Both ways make sense - like I said it is your call how you wire it up.
