Topic: The boredom of disability

Took me weeks to get the bike running... Finally on the road, and wouldn't you know it, I have my first get-off that has probably taken me out for the rest of the season.

A friend and I were taking an awesome run down one of the more interesting local roads.  Had just turned aroud to head gome, was in a nice right sweeper and a damn deer bolts out of my blind spot on the left...  Deer jumped, took me off the bike, landed ony rt shoulder. I jumped up thinking that I needed to get the bike out of the road... What do I see but the bike riding off without me on it!  It heads into a ditch, pops up an embankment and delicately lays itself to rest on its side. No real damage except a bend in the rear fender and left exhaust pipe (which I was planning on replacing anyways)... No worse for the wear.

Me, on the other hand, fractured left wrist and right humerus which required surgery to repair...

so, what was my point again?  I guess just to send out another reminder to RIDE SAFE!!

Damn dude....sorry to hear of your bad luck!!! Although, it could be considered good luck as other riders have not been as fortunate when meeting up with a deer!!!

My hopes for a full and speedy recovery!!

Heal up soon.  Stay as physically active as you can, keep yourself busy and socialize.  It'll help keep away depression.

thanks guys.  If boredom and relatively little pain is the worst of it, then as far as i am concerned I am waaay ahead of the game...  If i start to feel sorry for myself, then i think of alternate ways this could have played out and count my blessings.

I have an irrational fear of hitting a deer. They are all over our area here. As the OP learned, it would be just luck to miss one that ran from your blind spot. Youtube has way too many clips of people hitting deer!

Not having a fear of hitting a deer is irrational.  Those boogers are everywhere.  I live in a fairly dense suburban area(inside the Washington D.C. beltway) and have seen groups with as many 6 or 7 walk up my street.  And there are deer in Rock Creek Park(actually all over) inside D.C..

Years ago, I was riding at night near a wooded area near me, on a road doing about 50mph or so.  No street lights so it was very dark.  Suddenly, for the barest split second, I see a deer jump through my headlight beam not 10 feet in front of me!     By the time it even registered on my brain a picosecond later, I was already past the deer.  Just a close call, but the closest I've ever had with a deer and the image is still burned into my mind.

Glad your wreck wasn't as bad as it could have been.

have had 2 close call with deer this week the first one was about ten feet in front of me the second was clearing the front end when it registered  almost crashed from the shock and this was around 1pm full daylight
BTW hitting large rabbits while corning at 60mph is scary as it is done that twice now in last month the worst has to be the skunk that I hit last night. hum maybe a new thread how to clean skunk smell off bike. I only had to burn my pants  my bike smells like a skunk
