Vanson Manx jacket - any good?
« on: September 01, 2005, 11:21:43 AM »
Hello,

I just recently purchased a '75 cb750 (first bike) and would like to buy a good riding jacket.  As I don't have much experience, I don't really know the quality of various jacket companies.  Is the Vanson Leathers Manx a good jacket?  I like the no-frills styling, but don't want to buy a jacket on style alone - it needs to work and be good quality.  Any insight would be appreciated.

If anyone can mention other companies to look at I would appreciate that too.

Thanks!

Here's a photo of the jacket for reference...

I've had one for about 6 years now.  It is a well made and nicely durable jacket.  The only thing I've noticed that I don't like is that the velcro waist closure often sticks to the inside fabric if you walk around with the jacket open or when it is hanging in the closet.  The jacket fits snug and it is stiff leather; supportive and comfortable when you are riding, but not so comfortable off the bike.  The jacket also has no convenient outside pockets which I've found a bit of a nuisance at times.

They are great jackets, but then half my bike collection is worth less than the full RRP.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Great looking jacket, and Vanson is a good name.

I like my First Gear because it has pockets that when open make very good vents.

My experience is that the best jackets don't look too good at bars (except to other riders who know what you're wearing). (which probably isn't what you wanted... unless it is. Depending on the bar and all... OK, I'll sit down now)
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I've had a Vanson jacket for about 7 years now.  Great jacket.  Super heavy duty leather and is really only comfortable when riding.  Its too stiff to hang out in, but its solid.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I appreciate it.

Glenn - when you say that it's not comfortable off the bike, what do you mean by that?  Is the curvature of the sleeves a problem?  Stiffness of the leather?  Also, what color is the jacket exactly?  It's hard to tell if it's black or a worn-in dark brown.

Chris - what jacket model do you have?  Would you suggest the mid-weight leather to help combat the stiffness?

Thanks again guys.

ps.  I'm going to post some pics of my bike in the gallery after this if you feel like checking it out.

The jacket is very thick leather and is shaped for riding.  Very purpose-built.  It is also hot.  If you want a more versatile jacket, look at one of the ballistic nylon jackets - no worries about rain and better in the heat.

Glenn is right, the Vanson jackets are molded to the shape a rider will be in when riding.  The elbows are bent and when leaned over the jacket feels perfect. Just still when standing or walking.  There basically racing jackets.  I've got mine fitted with soft shoulder and elbow pads too, talk about stiff.

What size do you need.  I've actually been thinking of selling mine as I put on abit of weight and its getting alittle tight.  I have a size 42.  Its perfect condition, no road rash or anything.  Great jackets.

Thanks for the insight guys.  It helps a lot!

Chris - I'm 6'1" and 200lbs, so I don't think your jacket would fit... ;D  Thanks for the offer though.  I do have a friend that may be interested, can you send me a personal message with a price you were thinking about getting for it?  Thanks.
