Engine Sputter

This morning I was riding into work and traffic was extremely bad, stop and go for about 45 minutes.  The temp outside was in the mid 70s so I didn't get too worried about the engine overheating but just now when I went out to lunch my engine sputtered pretty bad almost like it was misfiring.  So I said to myself "Self, either you engine got too hot this morning or you were running too long at low RPMs"  so I revved the old girl up to 7000RPM and cruised for a minute or two.  After that the sputter went away.  I did this because my brother once mentioned when he got his R1 that if he didn't ride it at higher RPMs, his too would start to run rough.

Can you guys tell me what happened?

My guess would be that your induction system might be running a bit rich at low speeds. Under normal conditions it's not enough to foul the plugs, but extended idling might have fouled a couple of them. At the higher speeds the plugs burned off the carbon deposits and could then fire properly.

 Yes, the plugs probably carboned up.
Is your air filter dirty?
Are your air screws properly adjusted?

I've also had that sputter with a weak Battery.
