1978 supersport
« on: July 10, 2008, 01:01:53 PM »
I've never driven this year or model before.
When driving down the road, really any speed,  30 to 50 MPH, the bike seems to go side to side a little.  Like it's looking for it's centre line.  Not much, certainly not a speed wobble, but enough that I noticed it.
It has a new front tire and just had the steering head bearing replaced.
Is this normal, if not any ideas.
Thanks.

Could be a number of things.
The tire may not be mounted true. The rim could be warped a little. Front to rear alignment may be off.
Hell, the roads around here get these little grooves but into them after they have been poured and it can make the bike weave like you are describing.
Uneven shock preload or unequal fluid height can cause this.

Are the steering head bearings smooth?

Are you using ribbed tread pattern tires?

Are the tires worn square? (lots of center wear)

Great responces.
Not likely the roads, but now that you mention it, it does feel very much like riding on those ribbed concrete surfaces.
The front to rear alignment is a possibility.
I must check the front shock fluid, also a possibility.
The head bearings are new and feel OK, to me anyway.
The new front tire has 2 jagged ribs.
The rear tire is a little flat in the middle, I've probably had worse on other bikes, but ??
Tire pressure is good.
The swing arm, I'm not sure about this.  Another one to check out.

I've got some work to do.
