Powder Coatign Dilema
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:01:03 AM »
i'll make a long story short. i just bought a 1970 750 (chopper) on tuesday for $150. its a real mess, but it has a big bore kit in it, aluminum velocity stacks, finned covers, +6 inck fork tubes, and a couple of other things i needed to complete the cafe.  other than that its a mess. i also have a 1977 750 i'm turning into a cafe. i just finished painting the frame fire red. my neighbor/friend desides he'd love to build a 750 so i give him the 70 frame. he did some work for an industrial powdercaoting company and the guy owns him several favors. i can get my frame powder coated for free. that's right $0.00
okay now the dilema. do i tear off the paint and powdercoat the frame? or just say f%ck it and start reassembly.

Big decision....
What standard is the paint job you did?
Is the colour you want available in powder coat?
What standard is the work done by these people? Not all powder coat is equal.
What will you do about touch ups? Powder coat will chip not scratch and its thicker than paint, so its harder to get an almost invisible repair if its damaged.
It all depends on the standard of finish you want, do you want a show bike that your scared to ride in case you scratch it, or do you want a nice rider that will wear a scratch as a badge of pride?
Everything depends on what you want.
Just my thoughts.
Cheers

ya gott remember like troppo said not all powder coat is equal, but if you get a good place to go that stuff is bullet proof, try grabbing a bicycle frame and chipping/sanding a good powder coat job off :P
