What the??? Did someone mess with my rear brake?
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:25:44 AM »

Hi guys,
New to motorcycles in general, and very glad I found this forum for my new 78 CB750F!
So im not sure what happened, but the first pic is of the rear wheel from when it was on ebay, looks good, looks normal.
Then a few pics of what it looks like now... Did someone steal those screws that hold the brakes in??? Am I missing other parts? My battery died a few days ago and had to leave the bike on the street by my girls place for a night  >:(, I wonder what couldve happened???
I dont even know what the parts on the brakes are all called, but I want to work on my bike myself, so I would appreciate any advice on how to get this back to spec. What do I need and where I could buy it?
Thanks very much!

It looks like you are just missing two bolts, they
may have simply rattled off if they were not
properly tightened to begin with.
you can get them at any decent hardware
or auto parts store.

Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

Wow thats kinda scary!

I certainly hope no one stole those bolts and your brake pads!
That not only carries a misdemeanor charge but also an attempted murder or involuntary manslaughter charge!

Keep you eyes peeled for other F bikes in your neighborhood or niegher-do-wells lurking about.

Hopefully they just rattled out, but i would say its unlikely as the entire caliper slides on those two bolts.
Not to mention the brakes must have been operating fine when you stopped the bike before you noticed they were missing, right? did you hear any clunking/strange noises, or loss in braking force?

That's too weird.  It could have happened if the PO only hand tightened them when fiddling with the brakes just before you got the bike.

You then ride it around and they rattle loose...

I have the same bike and love it.  I put 2,500 miles on it last year and now have it torn down to the frame for a full rebuild and paint job.

You can pick up those bolts at your local hardware store.  Double check, but I believe the front and rears are the same size for reference.

I think you might be able to understand the screws working themselves loose, but the pads? You'd certainly notice when you lost them....

It was just from one day to the other, I had no more rear braking, so I stopped and noticed the whole assembly just hanging there. Very strange.
Is there anything in particular I should be careful when installing the assembly back on?
So I just need the bolts and the pads, thats good to know, its not even that expensive. Im thinking of getting the pads from the old bike barn:

Do you have any other parts sites you could recommend?
Thanks for the help guys, ride safe!

Caveat Emptor!!!

OBB doesn't have many fans around here-----> http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=25305.0

There are many places to buy pads.  A great vendor and forum member is Z1 enterprises.  ----> http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1322

Hey Ranger,

A bit off topic, but ---- it looks like you have very nice side covers.  They are one of the rarest pieces on your bike.  Take them off by using a flat bladed screwdriver on the back side while very gently pulling on the front.  If your gaskets are old and dry and cracked, spring for new ones.  It's a lot cheaper then trying to replace the sidecovers.

The last nice set I saw was 8 months ago and they went for almost $250

All the best-

Hmmm....left bike at girlfriends house, brakes messed with.... You two are tight, right? Women are weird sometimes. I have been home the last couple days, my weekend starts in the middle of the week, just lying around, wife works, I haven't shaved and I told her this morning before she goes to work that today looks like a nice day for a ride. She asks me if I am going to shave. What's with that question, I ignored it after a quick eye roll.

 ;D ;D ;D
she DID seem a little jealous of my bike actually, hmmmm... she has a thruxton but my 750 looks bigger and meaner and has two more cylinders than hers, plus the dual disc brakes out on front had her looking a little green. to top it off ive been spending less time on her with the new bike here  :D
