FYI I own a CB350F 72'
I went on vacation for a few day, and I come back to my replacement OEM airbox in the mail. The problem with my old one was I was missing the boot that connects the airbox (plastic thing that connects the four carbs to filter box) to the filter box, so there was a huge gap that lots of free air was rushing through. This caused the bike to accelerate slowly, and bog more then usual. After replacing this the bike immediately ran totally different. Better acceleration, top speed, and less boggy. I even hit my new top speed record today @ 103mph  :D

Now the bad thing, a couple days before I went on vacation my tach arm started jumping all over the place, I thought it was the wind since it was really blowing that day, but is still acting goofy with no wind. Also a small amount of oil looking substance is coming from the tach cables engine entry. Which makes me nervous. It also now has a spinning noise now that wasn't there before also coming from this engine entrance/tach cable area.

I would like to think it's a broken tach cable, but I'm really not sure since the small amounts of oil. I know sometimes oil will come from the head and spit everywhere, but I'm 99% sure it's not that because it's only in that confined area of the speedo entrance.

Any help, or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking  :),

Anyone?

Sorry to bump, right now I'm just wondering if I should ride it out not till I fix that tach cable, and see if that stops that noise. I just don't want to ride it and mess it up more then whats going on with it now.

Just FYI the bike is running great, just the noise, and tach craziness.

I don't know abought 350's but on 750's,the cable from the engine is the tach. The speedo is on the front wheel. You should probably take it apart and investigate. New cable and/or seal may be in order.

Hey Mr. Breeze, your right I ment tach cable. Actually just fixed the typo while you were responding. If you want it might help to re-read?

Do you think it's safe to ride if it ends up being just a broken tach cable, but still making that noise and very small oil spot near the entrance. I'm thinking the old cable must have broken after being brittle from no action and now it's seeing a lot of action.

Also anyone know how fast Z1 shipping is? I want to buy one from there but it would be awesome to get one ASAP.

Thanks for the input Mr.Breeze I appreciate it.

It would be worth your time to pull the tack cable out of the engine to check its O-ring and the condition of the worm gear.  If it is anything like the larger 4's, it's a simple thing to do.  Who knows, when you put it back together it may work just fine!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

yor small oil leak, might come from the damaged cable spinning out of centre and its moving the drive around sideways abit.thus pushing the oil seal apart abit..
i dont think you can do serious damage, unless its eating away the wormdrive..
i would take a peek and see...

New tach cable and new oil seal should fix you right up, and both are easy/quick jobs.  Z1 ships quick.  If you opt for the USPS Priority they should be at your door in 2-3 days.

Be careful not to strip the screw in the head when you remove it to take the cable out.

Sounds like the seal is gone too. Noise could be a rattly cable, I doubt if it's the worm gear but it's possible.

Also, Does the tach still work? does it wind up and indicate properly or is it just bouncing off the pin. If it doesn't, the cable's broken.
