Cam Advice
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:37:09 PM »
I've been calling around to the various cam shops and nobody has new cams in stock.  They offer weld and regrind services that they say is better anyway and will last longer.  I am installing Wiseco 836 pistons and heavy duty springs from Cycle X.

Megacycle recommended their 125-65 (last one here):

Webcamshafts recommended their 63a (fourth one down on this link):

http://www.webcamshafts.com/pages/motorcycle/honda/honda_cb_750_sohc_8v.html

Do you folks have any recommendations on new vs. regrind and also on the best cam for a street bike?

Thanks!

I've used both cams you have listed and either one would be good for a street racer. A lot of top end power without sacrificing much at all in low end, city traffic riding. The Megacycle cam dyno'd with a little more peak power range than the Webcam, but the Webcam had slightly higher overall BHP. Cam's were installed in different motors with different carbs and port work so no precise comparison can be made from the dyno #'s. They are close enough that you should be happy with either one is all :)

Mrieck prefers Megacycle production quality, my pocketbook prefers the Webcam cost. If Webcam no longer sells billet cams and a regrind from them costs as much as the Megacycle then I would go with the Megacycle regardless.

Reason no one is selling billets anymore is that the core suppliers have either stopped producing or greatly increased minimum run amounts. Email Buzz at dynoman.net and see if he has any Webcam billets in stock.

With a head and valve job, the 125-65 cam gives 86bhp with 62ftlb of torque...enough to rip your scrawny arms out ;D ;D ;D ;D

I hope the weather's better for you Mike, we've had nothing but rain for weeks. >:( >:( >:( >:(

Had quite a few tornadoes as well but none of them touched down enough to do any damage.

One lady lost all her washing from the clothes line, someone managed to video it with a camera/mobile phone and sent it to the TV.

I think we have about 30 a year but we can go years without damage, although, we have had a couple in the last two years that have made a bit of a mess.

Of course I knew. Problem is I don't always know what I knew, know what I mean? A gentle nudge with a sledgehammer generally jogs the memory, but if there's no hammer in reach then I'll just stick to asking the same question over and over ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

As long as we're walking all over Bunghole's cam thread..... I was able to pace my bike with another that was using GPS speedometer this weekend. 81mph was as fast as we could comfortably go side by side(close enough that I could read his gauge and mine simultaneously). My speedo read 83mph so still thinking that 148mph may be a bit generous but not by too much. All this to say that I am waiting to be impressed with some serious flyer times from that "soft" engine ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

At the last meeting Sean, he ran the bike naked on acount of the high cross winds. It was on 18/39 gearing and ran 112mph in third at the end of the quarter in 12.2 seconds.

Sam, is that a rolling 1/4?..pretty high gearing.. use a 54 a lot myself.. ;D

Back to cams, I had good luck with RC Eng cams..

Gotta be used ones on ebay fairly often I would think?

When i first joined up here, I ran an ad looking for a 900 kit. Got a worn 970, that I may turn into a 1000cc, but I got a flowed head with stainless valves with it too, all for 400 bucks.. ;D.. and a really nice RC 315.. included, Really nice cam that worked well for me..

Look around, you may luck into one..

Just hang in there. Web has sprung for an entire new production run of billets. They will be the only ones with billets. I believe they may be about two weeks out. We have a bunch on order with them.

No Frank, it was a standing start. It was geared for fliers but the cross wind made it dangerous for high speeds.
The strange thing was that it was only two tenths down on it's fastest with the high gearing and no streamlining.

Jay,

Can you explain for the masses the term billet and cam manufacture? Is this a "blank" that a cam is ground from or a forged ready-to-go cam, etc?   AND what about the bunch you have on order? Please explain the details.

You guessed it Jerry. Billets are the "blanks" that cams are ground from. Not sure but I believe the billet blanks are complete except for the lobe profile that Webcam will be grinding. Jay lists two choices on his site, 41a and 63b I'm guessing(Webcam #'s are not listed, uses lift #'s instead)
