Replacing my tank with a different year
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:02:31 AM »
I got a 78 CB750K, I dont like the color of the bike, or the size of the tank. Tank is huge, has a dent in it, and is not even the original color anyway, and gets in the way of the bars i put on it. Can i basically take any year tank and put it on this bike? Figured id kill two birds with one stone that way, just find the color tank i want, put it on then paint the side panels to match. Would that work? And yes i know that would be completely frankensteining this bike, but i would keep the orignal tank in case i sold it.

I've seen several 77/78K bikes with earlier K tanks mounted on them.  I believe the frame from the forward tank mounts to the rear tank mount is the same on all single cam K bikes.  And, the 77/78K's look really sweet with an earlier tank mounted.

My bike is a 1972 cb750 K , and when I bought it it had a 1978 tank mounted to it.

So I asume that you can swap from year to year.

The older tanks def. look way better than the new ones , in my opinion.........

The only issue is that the '78 tank is longer overall, so when you instal the earlier tank, you will have about 1" gap between it and the '78 seat.  The seats on '77 and '78 bikes have hinges in a different place than prior years, so you cant' swap both without some welding and metal fabrication.

If you really want it to look right with the earlier tank, it would be easier to have your seat re-contoured and re-covered.

or get a fiberglass rear tail section and go all cafe racer on it.

I always though supersport tanks look the best on midified bikes, but that just one man's opinion. Airtech makes a CR750 tank and seat for the bike and that looks the best but be prepared to spend 600+ on getting what you need. If you can find an old tracy body that will take care of your tank and seat issues all at once.

The only issue I can forsee is from K0-K4 the petcock was on the right side of the bike, with the idle speed adjustment on the left, under the tank. Starting with the K5 model, the petcock was moved to the left side and the fuel line connections were changed. I heard the idle speed screw was relocated to the right side for ease of access later on. It looks like from the picture below it can probably be done, just might have to shift a few things around...
