what is this and why is it leaking oil? 78 cb550
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:32:00 PM »
Rode my bike to work almost dumped it at the last light. Felt like a rear flat tire. Got to work there was oil all over the left side of the tire. It was also dripping for a drain hole on the bottom of the front sprocket cover. I got it home today and took the cover off (pain) all four phillips heads were stuck and then stripped out.

Time for a stainless allen set!

once I got in there, I found the leak was coming from what ever this thing is where the screw driver is pointing. Right out of the screw.

i loosened it and oil came out. tightened it and more oil came out. Is this the oil pump and why is it leaking so bad. The bike was bone dry from my 10 minute commute to work.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

ok, so i need an oil pressure switch. I think i'll order one from bikebandit.com or somewhere.

What could have caused this? Overfill of oil? Low oil? Wrong oil? or something else?

It's your fault.  You've been riding it haven't you.  Poor thing is over thirty years old and you're on its back all the time!   ;D

The switch has a set of contact inside, a spring, and membrane call a diaphragm.   The membrane flexes and ages and eventually cracks, letting the oil that it is monitoring, escape.

Gotta replace parts in machines from time to time.
