Newbie w/ some questions
« on: September 02, 2005, 02:40:54 PM »
First off, I want to apologize if this is in the wrong section. Please move if neccesary. I just started using this board to learn more about these wonderful bikes.

I am currently in the market for a 1970's Honda motorbike and wanted to get the opinions from you guys since it seems you are "the people" to talk to on this matter. I have been looking at CB500/550's CB400F's, and CB350F's. This will be the first bike I have ever owned myself. I have ridden motorbike's in the past (mostly in London when I was studying there) so I know my way around on a bike. The thing is, the only bike I have ridden was a Yamaha 125 2-stroke, so I am not certain what the feeling of these Honda 350's or 400's will be.

I guess my question is, should I keep looking for a 500/550 or will a 350 or 400 satisfy my small craving for speed? Of course, the bike is mostly for commute to and from school/work but I don't want to be putt-putting around town by any means. My roommate currently has a Yamaha 650/4 and it's exhilerating. I am (and always will be) a Honda guy. I drive a Honda and I want to ride one as well. I appreciate any reponses that you all can give me. Thanks again! :)

I rode Kghost's cb350 yesterday. and I had a grin from ear to ear every second I was on it...however I would not want it to be my everyday rider.

But I am 5'11'' and 225 lbs.

Like kghost said...the cb350 is just barely a full size motorcycle.

I am 6'0" and 175lbs. Do you think I would be better off getting a 500/550? I am just worried that if I get a 350, I will outgrow it after a few months and look back wishing I had bought a more powerful model.

Go with the 550, and in a few months you'll be trading it in for the 750. The 550 is a beautiful bike, I have one myself, but I also have 2 750's. I am 6'4" 210 pounds and the 550 rides greaT.

I was going to suggest the 400 before you mentioned your size. My 400 will go just fine and out-handle many out there (but I'm only 3'12", 90lbs). Perhaps the 500 might be better than the 400 for you bigguns. The 500 is a better bike than the 750 in the handling dept, and is almost as fast.

they are mostlikely right with the 550.

keep in mind that a 750 is about 500 lbs. and is not the best starter bike.

Most definately, I didn't plan on going any higher that a 550.

550 with a header, good shocks and sticky tires will make you grin.    ;D

Everyone forgets the CB650!!

Sure it was only made from 79-82 (until the DOHC SC nighthawk came out) but I'm loving every minute of mine.  Plenty of power for me, and it fits pretty well, considering I'm 6'2 225lbs.  It weighs around 425, and has enough punch to please you (it's a bored out 550 engine).

My '82 gets 50mpg with top speed of about 120.

I agree with DD...I think the 650 is the best all around SOHC4 for everyday riding.  Low maintenance with the electronic ignition, great gas mileage and easy to handle.  Not a problem for yourself, but the '82 Nighthawk has a nice low seat for people with Duck's disease.  And, they seem to sell for a lot less than the others.  I rode one for 20 years and still love it.

BTW--welcome aboard, this is a great place to hang out.

I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

Dan....have you found that the first number goes up when you keep the second one down?      ;-)

Dear God I would never actually TAKE it to 120mph...  The wind just about beats me to death at 85 (not to mention my bike still has some *ahem* problems... that high of a speed could possibly be suicidal).  But cruising at 65 I generally get around 50mpg. :)
