want to see 11 inch shock on bike picture
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:56:36 AM »
Wanted to see how it looked with just the 11 inch shocks on any sohc bike. I dont want to use lowering blocks and I am thinking this may be the best way to preserve most of the original handling.

I know you're probably interested in seeing these shocks on a complete bike, but here's a before and after of my 750 from when I installed a pair of MDI brand 11 inch shocks.  In the 'before' pic I was running aftermarket shocks from JC Whitney, think those were 13 or 13.5 inches which is more or less stock length.

Note the change in the swingarm angle, bike is on a lift so this is at full extension.

Do believe I paid around $75 plus shipping for those on eBay.  Cannot comment on their performance as of yet but I'm pleased with the fit and finish.

This may be a dumb question but what are the advantages of going with shorter shocks vs. having the stock sizes?

If you're short, it helps to get your feet flat on the ground.  Otherwise it's typically done for looks.

I shortened these down to just over 11 (11 1/8 ???). It rides fine, better than it has since I`ve had it but I also did alot of other stuff  too (neck brngs s/a bush etc).

i got mine from cycle re cycle for about $80 or $90.

yeah, i'm real short (5'4") and this helped my feet touch the ground. i can't really say how it effects the handling but i manage just fine on the ozark back roads here. it also drops the CG and handles great at slower speeds. one downfall is the bike doesn't lean as much on the kickstand. i actually tipped it last night cause i decided to get off the right side  :o. luckly for the footpeg and handlebar being the furthest points from the bike. nothing was damaged except my dignity as my friend watched my bike fall on me.

Hey CB650Bobber.....

I've got a pair of the 11" shorty shocks from Cycle Re-Cycle (i live a mile or so from them)  ;D

I'll give 'em to you for the price of shipping.  Send me a PM for details.  Nothing wrong with them, I'm just not gonna use them.

Cheers...Joe

Thats awesome, I love how you chopped the rear fender and slimmed the seat down. Those tires are sexy 2. Where did you get those? and if you don't mind how much?

Thanks for the share, killer bike man.

I cut the shaft down 1 1/2" and took 1 1/2 coils out of the springs  ??? ???I don`t remember the exact , I did it all in a hurry at work one afternoon. Be forwarned tho, since the springs are shorter the rate goes up (stiffer) so I had to use a press to re-assemble, you necessarily NEED a shop press but it was available, but some type of compressing tool would be needed to get everything back together safely.

Does anyone know what ties he's using here? I'm looking through pirelli tires, and they seem pretty affordable but thats with there low end models. I wonder if it would be better to get a low end pirelli or a mid-high range avon or bridgstone?

Sorry :P back on topic, Cycle Re-cycle is totally out of the short shocks. But all of there shocks are made by Emgo and should be able to be found elsewhere. I was thinking about maybe 12" shocks. When you say "flat footed" do you mean while sitting or standing above the bike?

I can barley double flat foot while standing, but while sitting have to lean to the side with one foot on the peg and the other sits flat on the ground. Anyways I've also heard Forsa makes short shocks that are 11" they pop up on ebay as CB750 short shocks once and a while for the same price Emgo's are.

Here's the link for Cycle Re-Cycle shocks, I haven't emailed them but they will probably have some in stock soon.

As far as I know Pirelli does not make that tire any longer. I originally put those tires on several years ago, but I never really rode it till this summer.

well, i can only tippy toe when on my bike. the lower CG helps keep it balanced.

if you can disassemble stock shocks, you can replace the coils with shorter ones. look for four wheeler shocks at a local bike shop.

PROTEAL You lowered the front two from the looks of it huh....I am debating if I should do that or not...once I get the rear shocks I guess I will check the look and see if I want to lower the front....or if the handling seems bad.
