My ridin season is over for now...
« on: July 12, 2008, 08:27:34 PM »
I blew a hole in my transmission case while treatin myself to my annual b-day run. It went in a way that I couldnt do again even if I tried. Ive got tech questions, and warnings to other riders about it and pix.... but Ive got to get a handle on this damn photobucket thing. Im tired of readin faq's and tryin this way and that to get it goin. It cant be as hard as it seems to me.

Heres the deal. Took my pix in jpg format, uploaded to p-bucket, and converted the size to 815 x 607 which I hope will give good enough detail. Based on p-buckets recommendations I should use the IMG code for Forums & Bulletin Boards. IF thats correct, do I copy/paste that code into the main body area of the message here or is it copied to the space below under +additional options/attachements?

Which code is working the best for others and what are the steps needed to make this sum#$%* work?

Thanx in advance. Im gonna go stare at a motor now..........

Thankya once again seaweb. Kinda odd. Changed my code on p-bucket to img coding. Copied code. Clicked img button here, then pasted between the brackets. On each end of the whole thing was 2 sets of these. [img][IMG]. I deleted the upper case img on each end including its brackets and it worked.

Now Ill put a few pix up in a minute.....

The way you're copying from photobucket, you won't need to hit the image button here, just click the img code on the photobucket page, then right click paste or ctrl+v here and the image code will appear here.

A hole in your case is a crappy birthday present.  Hope it was better in other ways.

All right lets give this a try.

First off. Double check anything that might come off your bike and make sure all bags and straps are secure. Simple advice. B4 I ride its simple habit to look at my fork bag and make sure its closed and cinched. How I took off this time without doing this is still baffeling me, and causing alot of self ass kickin over it.

This is a shot looking at the rear of the trans case. Note the freakin hole between the case and the front sprocket.

Leaving the fork bag open, somehow a rag came out and made the journey to the chain and got balled up and caused a sh!t load of pressure on the case.

Enough pressure and lack of space in that area to crack the sprocket case cover around the mounting bolts and taking another quarter sized piece of metal next to the bolt with it.

Ive got the motor pretty much tore down but Im stuck at the point where I remove the stator assembly and the small flywheel behind it.

The manual says a special puller tool is required and it shows a picture of a tool that is simple looking in design. My tech question is can I get this off w/o the special tool? Im not sure the purpose of the tool so Im rather limited in constructing a different device to do what I dont know what is being done. Thats a confusing sentence. Ive got another case found from a coworker for 50 bux but havent compared #'s yet, but this is hanging me up for the moment in splitting the case in two.

Ideas?

Thanx dusty. Thatll save me a little time.

By the way, if I have to find something positive right now, I finished taking pics for the coffee table book the day before.

the stator has a threaded portion in it, get a bolt to fit that, not the same as the bolt holding it on.

I think i read somewhere here that the rear axle does the job somehow, try doing a search for removing a stator or something similar...

You can use a bolt to remove the rotor.Size I use is 20mm dia.,1.5mm pitch.,75mm length.Bolt will thread into rotor and will force rotor off of taper on end of crank. An impact gun is best to use as the shock of the bolt hitting the end of crank is easiest way to loosen rotor.   Rock On

Boat - Happy Birthday BTW. You have my total sympathy. Thats a big price to pay for a small oversight. I nearly paid with my life while on a birthday ride when a cager turned left in front of me. I can still see his back bumper clearing my front wheel by a foot, 30 years after it happened.

You dont have to pull the rotor to split the cases or lift the crank:

If you really want to remove the stator rotor the oil filter bolt is the same thread as the "puller". It's just a bolt. i'm not sure what's holding you up. You can split the cases without pulling the rotor. There's nothing under there that needs to be un done.

Make sure the replacement cases are similar in years. the early ones (K0, 1,2) are different than K3, 4, 5, 6. Then the K7,8's are different again. Do not try to use your old main bearings in your new cases. They most likely won't be the same. On the front of the casing's flange you'll find five letters stamped into it. Mine is B,B,B,B,A That means 4 "B" main bearing sets and 1 "A" set. They're different sizes and you could make a real mess with the wrong ones. Buy new ones! http://www.hondaparts-direct.com/ has the best prices on mains that I've found. It's also a good idea to change your cylinder studs. http://www.cyclexchange.net/Honda%20Page.htm http://www.dynoman.net/ or http://cbrzone.com/ all have HP cylinder studs. Sometimes the stock ones just don't tighten up. sometimes they just snap!
There's nothing worse than a newly assembled motor peeing like and old Harley!

Woe and woe again brother, I was trying to figure out what the slots were in front of the sprocket, never dreamed they were gear teeth! :'(
Holes in crankcases can be Araldited but if the cracks run through a bearing or shaft it's not strong enough.
Just remember next riding season your machine will be tops. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Actually boats, unless there is something wrong with the rotor or starter gear, you can rebuild the entire engine without removing it. There's no seal back there so just let it be.

Quite right everyone that rotor removal not required. However,if motor is being torn right down, rotor should be removed to A-make for much easier handling of crank, and B-allow for inspection and cleaning of starter drive clutch.   Rock On

Its goin good 4 the moment. All bolts out, ready to split the 2 halves. One more question before I do though. The Clymer manual shows having the motor upside down b4 seperating the 2. Will it matter that my intentions are to do it right side up, or will this be a case of opening your toolbox upsidedown and guts going everywhere?

I got lucky also. Finally pulled the pistons b4 removing the case bolts. Ever wonder how far the piston pin clip can travel if your magnet aint close enough? About 15 feet over my shoulder, off a stolen road sign on the wall, and another 10 feet to the right. Great thing was it took about 2 minutes to locate it, laying on the floor in the only freaking ray of sunlight I had happening at that moment. That will never happen again! Its gonna be a hell of a build.......... 8)

Fix those cases (reuse all your main bearings), but buy & keep the spare set(check them carefully)..

Should be back running in  a week or 10 days.

That is not a real bad break..

You have to do it upside down.. well maybe not to get apart, but you surely do to reassemble.. it is just plain easier

MAKE SURE YOUU GET THE FEW SMALL  BOLTS OFF on the topside before you do the split..

Bought a 78 750 f3 motor on friday. All black minus where the po used a wire wheel here and there. Havent decided the exact motor condition or what Ill take off for mine, but its on the stand for evaluation. Right now Im leaning towards parting it out for all the members in need here. Im rather partial to putting my internals back into a real k8 case instead of just making something work to get me back on the road. No hurry, Ive got till next season to spend the time to make it the way I want it and keep it all k8 original......
