oil filter change techniques?
« on: September 02, 2005, 07:29:24 PM »
I am thinking of removing my header when I chande my oil filter. the filter housing just barely fits between the pipes and gets oil all over them. And it is apin in the ass getting the bolt lined up...I fear I may cross thread it one day.

Plus I just painted my header and dont want to scratch it all up...they rust fast enough!

What do you folks do...

I just go slow. When unbolting the housing, let it sit a bit and the oil will drain down the housing. Sure it is messy on the housing but when it is done, I dont have to worry about gunking up my headers. I guess I have never had a problem so i never thought about it.

I agree putting it back on is a pain, but if you press the entire housing against the lower case as you start the bolt it helps overcome the spring wanting to push the filter core out so the bolt threads don't want to catch.

I second the push the housing against the case.

Use a ratchet after you crack the bolt loose.

The push against the case trick works taking it off too. That way the oil dripping is kept to a minimum.

There is an oil drain bolt at the bottom of (the filter housing) on the engine. Draining the filter before removing will certainly help with the oil mess.

I'm with Buffo

The PO made a custom pipes and didn't leave room for the filter housing to pass thought the header, so I have to remove my headers.  Gona have to get one of the coolers and spin on addapters from Oz.
