Cafe CB750F Project
« on: July 18, 2008, 04:17:37 PM »
Started this project a couple months ago and thought I would share some pic with the forum.  I picked this bike up for 900 bucks.  It hadn't run since 84.  I replaced the oil and filter, changed the plugs, rebuilt the carbs.  Bike fired up on the first try.  Since then I stripped it down.  Had it powder coated.  Welded some brackets to accommodate 03 CBR900 rearsets.  Had all the engine parts and controls polished.  Re laced the front rim and will be lacing the rear wheel this weekend.  A friend of mind is making me some brass bushings for the swing arm.  It will have a CB500T tank on it that I had to modify for the carbs.  Still needs a way to go.  Maybe another month or or two before shes on the road.  It the first time I ever rebuilt a motorcycle.  It's been fun.  Let me know what you think.

Nice work so far.  And fast, too!  I wish I could measure my progress in months!  I'm guessing you don't have kids  ;)
It took 10 years but she's finally done!

I do have a child but shes already 24.  I usually work on stuff after work for a couple hours a couple nights a week.  I get obsessed with hobbies.  I will post more pics.

The seat is a fiberglass construction.  I purchased it from a guy out here in California.  He's out of OC.  His name is Carpy.  He builds some amazing cafe bikes.  http://www.cb750cafe.com/

He has some cool products on his sight.  He's where I got the insperation to build this project.

I'll take some close ups of the rearsets as soon as they get back from the polisher.  Should be around Tuesday.  Thanks for the response guys.

Well it's been a couple weeks and I've moved forward on the bike.  I decided to go with a CB500T tank.  I liked the way the sides indent.  I had to make some mods to get it to work.  I had to tub out two areas underneath so the carbs could function.  Here are some pics of the original tank and the 500 tank.

I made a mistake earlier on the rearsets.  They are from a 03 CBR 954not a 900.  When I first picked these I had no idea if they would work.  I liked the way they looked and I couldn't find any rearsets I liked that bolted on.  I purchased the set on ebay for under 100 bucks.  I had them polished and mounted far back. I am using the brake cylinder that came with the rearsets.  I'm making an extension for the shifter so it can be adjusted.

Here is the bike with the tank and seat.  They are not yet mounted.  Still have to make some custom brackets.  I should have the tires mounted sometime next week.

I've got a 76 F as well, and the first mod I want to make is clubman handlebars (it came with drag bars - not comfy).  I've heard horror stories - how much of a pain was it to get the wiring right with the clubmans?  Did you go through the bars, or just bypass them (it looks pretty clean, either way)?

I am not going to run the wires through the bars.  I thought about it then decided not to.  To much of a hassle especially if i have to trouble shoot a problem later on.

And it still looks good!  That's a relief to me, I was anticipating a horrible weekend of threading and swearing.  Good point about trouble-shooting, too.

Keep up the good work,

Mac

Looking really nice.

I think I bought the same seat off of ebay. I haven't mounted mine yet. Did you used the stock hardware to mount it?

am continuing my research on installing spoked wheels on my '78F.   am hopeful i can lace a 17inch K rim to a early F hub.  i always like the look of the 130/90 - 17 rear tire on my K (sold - alas!).  what size rims are you lacing on your bike?

Have to make custom mounting for the seat.  Didn't like the original hardware setup.
