Stuck petcock screws - impact driver?
« on: July 28, 2008, 06:58:14 AM »
I removed the bowl from my petcock, CB750 K4, and tried to loosen the two screws mounting it to the tank.  They are really stuck!  I am afraid of stripping the heads if I try any harder.  Is it ok to use an impact driver to break this screws loose?

I'd try a penetrant first, let it soak in. Then try the impact driver but just using it as a screwdriver with a big fat handle. This worked for me.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Bob,

Thanks for the tip.  I have it soaking in penetrating oil.  I will try using the impact driver without the hammer.

Careful with the impact driver. The bottom of the tank is fairly thin metal. Any hard blows to the petcock will push it in around the base of the petcock. I have found out the hard way. I had to drill the heads of the screws off in the end. By the way, if you can't find replacement fibre washers for the screws from Honda, the ones from the XS650 or Maxim Yamahas will work.
Cheers,
Cliff.
