Put yourself on the map

A cool version to let peepholes know where you live. You have to have a google account to do it though. Easy, free sign-up.

Hmmm.. having problems inserting hyperlink. Copy and paste into browser:

OK that took me ages but finally I got it all sussed, I'm on the map, nearly missed as New Zealand is about the size of an ant!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

You need a Google account, they are no big deal to get and don't cost you anything. Generally just using your email addy is fine.

1) Log into Google, which you can do right on the map page.
2) You'll then have an "Edit" button.
3) Click Edit.
4) There will be a Push Pin Icon above the map, press it to create your marker. You may want to increase the zoom level first to accuratley place it.
5) Press save.

Thanks Phil, I didn't know. I noticed that the frapper map uses Google maps but it is a 2006 beta version. This one that was just created is a Google map 2008 version. I think it has more options. It works a little faster on my computer anyways.

I like google maps a LOT more, why not have 2? Also I notice LOTS of people with little or no information, no pics, and outdated on that map. Also it's a lot harder to find people, and or recognize those little orange dots on the map. Hopefully constructive criticism, because I actually really like this idea.

EDIT:

If anyone wants to join in on this one, this is how you add your placemark.

First you need to sign into you google or gmail account (I think maybe not necessary correct me if I'm wrong) and then select "Edit" This should be in the left sidebar.

Once your in edit mode you should see 4 little icons in the upper left corner of the map. You want to select this one

Simply drag the marker to where you live, fill in your name and information (you might have to click on the marker after you drop it where you live to see the information field to fill in)

If you want to get really creative when your filling in your info, you should see a option for "rich text" this will allow you to add a small image, and also change how your placemarker looks (thats how some have motorcycles or red ones)

For any additional information, just ask and you may want to see googles how to page as well.

Hope that helps,

Okay I'll put myself on the map... again. ;)

What happened to the Frappr map that was started a few years ago and had quite a few members shown on it?  A lot of members went through the trouble of signing up for and placing themselves on the map and then it never really got much publicity and eventually faded away.  Hopefully the same thing doesn't happen with this one.

I think for the map to endure it needs to have a highly visible link somewhere, maybe even an icon under each user's avatar that takes you directly to that member's location on the map.

Or make it a part of the registration process.  Of course this wouldn't work retroactively, so all of the current members would have to do it on their own, but I am pretty sure that we could handle that.  Glenn mentioned something in another thread about a possible application that takes the zip code or city/state/country from our profile and then places a mark on the map with our username.

What we should really do is combine the mugshots, occupation in the real world, and the map threads on to one map so that the placemark has our mugs and occupations.  Or is that making our virtual friends a little too real?  :o :o ;)

Of course, there are those that are just a little paranoid (some rightly so).  Not everyone wants others to know exactly where their stash lays.

And then there are others, who dislike stuff that isn't html (like Flash) and must be added to their browser.  They may be a little on-line paranoiad (versus real world paranoid).

Of course, none of these scenarios apply to me.  I'm even listed in the telephone book.  But wait, I don't have flash installed. ??? ??? How then can I sign-up?

I'm not overly paranoid, but I did originally place the marker directly on top of my house on the map, but then moved it to the nearest major intersection after thinking about it for a minute.  No need for anyone to know exactly where I live unless I want them to. 8)

So we put a pin in the map to show where we live and we list all of our bikes in our footers in this open forum....maybe we should start a holiday calendar as well and then the thieves can shop at their convenience...? ::)

Shoot fellas, I just figured everyone would put the mark on their city.  No need to let everyone know your address.  I made the map because 754 started a thread about how some Sohc4er's would ride past his shop without stopping and saying hi.  I thought that it would be handy to know where people are in your area, or if you are taking a road trip to know where you could find friendly people if you break down, etc.  The idea was to just have your username and city placemarked on the map and then you could find the member on this site and pm the person to get their address if they wanted you to have it.

I didn't think about listing the general area.  Last time I looked on yahoo or google maps, I got the satellite image of my house and shop.  I could even differentiate the cars in my driveway.
